Shame Weighs Heavily

Each member of the U.S. House of Representatives, by virtue of the office he or she holds, is accorded the title “Honorable.” One of the definitions of the word “honorable” is as follows: “characterized by integrity: guided by a keen sense of duty and ethical conduct.”

The tragic events at the U.S. Capitol on January 6 were directly incited by the shameful goadings of Donald J. Trump and indirectly supported by the pledges of some members of the Senate and House of Representatives to vote in support of Trump’s meretricious claims of a stolen election during what should have been a routine acceptance of the electoral votes sent to the Congress by the 50 states.

By virtue of Lee Zeldin’s support for the two measures to reject the electoral votes submitted to Congress by the states of Arizona and — even after the riots disrupted the process — Pennsylvania, Mr. Zeldin has forfeited the “Honorable” title.

The results of the presidential election have been challenged some 60 times in almost every conceivable fashion, including an appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court. Not one of those challenges has been supported by any credible evidence, and all of them have been thrown out by the courts to which they were submitted.

The fiction that the election was flawed, crooked or rigged has been the focus of Donald J. Trump’s life for the past two months. The fact that this fiction has been subscribed to by a number of senators and representatives, men and women who have taken an oath to uphold the Constitution and the laws of the land, defies comprehension.

The only logical outcome of their position, were it to have prevailed, would have been to overthrow an election that has been described by Republicans and Democrats alike as one of the most secure ever undertaken, and to keep in power the man who was voted out of office.

Lee Zeldin’s support of, and participation in, Donald Trump’s efforts to refute the 2020 presidential election have left the concepts of integrity and ethical conduct in the dust. They cannot be forgotten by his constituents. His remaining time in office, and his biography, will be sullied by his efforts to overturn the electoral votes of two states whose citizens supported the election of Joseph R. Biden as the next president of the United States.

May this shame weigh heavily upon him.
