Years ago, it was a snowy day when I sat on a metal folding chair in a packed Social Security office in Riverhead. (Hopefully, it’s been refurbished.)
There must have been 50 people in this small room at all times, given the coming and going, many with clothing sporting the flag and/or veteran hats during the hour or so when I was there.
I recall that day as a practical byproduct of the current government shutdown.
Half of the people at Social Security with me that day may have voted Republican, with half of them being recipients of both Medicare and Medicaid.
How does Congressman Nick LaLota, or any Republican congressional member in New York or other states threatened by our president, not stand up to say, “Stop — this could cost us the district!”?

Jess McNerney’s Letter to the Editor [“Closer Look,” October 30] aptly pointed to the democratic process here in Southampton Village. Big-money contributions, secrecy of governmental activities, consolidation of power, and other trends have emerged, endangering the abilities of citizens to...
Recent Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids in Hampton Bays and Westhampton Beach lay bare the irrational immigration policies of the Trump administration. I wrote this one and a half years ago: “In February 2017, The Southampton Press’s Michael Wright...
