Racism In Our History

A bill to change the name of Robert Moses State Park — because of the racism of Mr. Moses — was introduced in Albany last week by State Assemblyman Daniel O’Donnell of Manhattan. An attorney, he grew up in Suffolk County, in Commack (and is an older brother of Rosie O’Donnell, the TV personality and author). His measure declares that “Robert Moses repeatedly abused his power to entrench racial and economic segregation.” Examples cited: When Moses built Jones Beach State Park, “he intentionally ordered the overpasses of the connected parkway too low for buses, so that poor people, particularly African-American ... 9 Dec 2019 by Staff Writer

How They Voted

As a resident and property owner on the South Fork, I appreciate your recent article on the Housing Stability and Tenant Protection Act of 2019 signed into law by Governor Andrew Cuomo in June [“New Requirements For Landlords, And Rights For Tenants, Laid Out,” Residence, 27east.com, November 25]. Your balanced analysis did a thorough job explaining the confusion and consequences that landlords now face. The article omitted one important aspect of this controversy; that is, which of our elected officials supported this bill? This lapse is surprising, given that our local media should encourage transparent governance and engaged citizenship, particularly ... by Staff Writer

The Demise Of Civility

“Base Instincts,” the title used for Phil Keith’s usual diatribe against all things Trump [Mostly Right, Opinion, December 5] is an exercise in the very partisanship his article complains about. He, like seemingly every Democrat and, frankly, this paper, are unable to accept the reality that Donald Trump was the duly elected president and elects to use all the powers that office constitutionally owns. It never occurs to Democrats that the demise of civility in our national politics was the result of the personal way they argue their points. In my own experience, it never fails to rise to a ... by Staff Writer

Look At Tuckahoe

You’re kidding — really? Recent reports by Newsday and the state comptroller’s office underscore what many already know: “Nassau and Suffolk homeowners are severely overburdened by housing costs.” Preeminent among those costs are property taxes. And while Nassau property owners are holding their assessors to account by filing lawsuit after lawsuit, we, in the Town of Southampton, will be awaiting the results of a “study” proposed by Jay Schneiderman as an election-year sop. “A Study as it Relates to Market Trend Analysis and Full Valuation impacts on the Assessed Valuation of Real Property with the Town of Southampton,” which accompanies ... by Staff Writer
