Southampton’s Finest

My wife and I simply wanted to express our appreciation for the fine work of Detective Sergeant Herman Lamison and Detective Steven Rios a few weeks ago in Southampton Village.

On February 25, my wife started her day the same way she always does: getting our big basset hound ready for his morning trip to the dog park. Only this time it was different when she opened the front door. Much to her surprise, our car had been stolen right out of the driveway overnight.

Despite a 10-foot-high black iron fence, the thieves climbed it, jumped into the car and drove from First Neck Lane sometime around 11:30 p.m. What is most alarming is that my wife was alone that night and had walked our dog a few minutes before the car was actually taken. (We know this based on the video surveillance that the police department later shared with us.) What could have happened had they actually met face to face?

It’s an extremely violated feeling and, in all honesty, we still struggle to think that these people, with no regard for private property, walked around our yard, opened up our car doors, jumped in, stole it and drove off with reckless abandon. To us, it is just a sickening thought.

As our luck might have it, Mandy and I had befriended Det. Sgt. Lamison about 18 months prior, and we knew to call him immediately. He was on site a few minutes later with Det. Rios, and they were truly exemplary in keeping us calm, in going through the video feeds and in finding the stolen car (which had been driven through the night) in the Bronx. With the help of the NYPD, the car was recovered — albeit with $20,000 in damage. Fair to say that it will never be the same …

We just wanted to take a moment to recognize the outstanding police work that Det. Sgt. Lamison and Det. Rios did. Honestly, they went above and beyond, were immediately available, stayed in close touch with us and located the stolen car. We are very appreciative of their kind help and consider ourselves fortunate in that no one was hurt.

We also feel a lot more comfortable knowing that these two represent Southampton’s finest.

In a world where too many people prefer to be critical, Mandy and I wanted to send a note and say “thank you” to these gentlemen, and to Southampton Village, which is a better and safer place given their service.
