Together We Can

Neighbors in Support of Immigrants held its second Recycled Bikes Give-Away on Sunday, May 7, in Red Creek Park, Hampton Bays. Some 70 people lined up to have a chance to select one of the 20 donated bikes we were able to offer. We also were able to purchase two new bikes and various cycling paraphernalia, like helmets, which were raffled off.

NISI volunteers wish to thank the great outreach done by the Social Justice Committee at Temple Adas Israel in Sag Harbor. The Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Bridgehampton supported us again this year as well with a generous donation. Ben Olavarria, proprietor of the Local Bike Shop in Hampton Bays, checked over some of our donated bikes, and we thank him again for his second year of support.

Hampton Bays High School’s annual summer jobs fair provided an opportunity for local youth to learn about this project, and we want to thank Lisa Patino and some of the ESL teachers for encouraging their students to participate and maybe get transportation to a summer job or recreational activities.

There were other volunteers who collected and transported the bikes, some who assisted with sprucing them up, others who helped with the crowd, the raffle, and translation, and a community member who bought a new inner tube for a bike that wouldn’t hold air.

Thank you to our community. Together we can do so much.
