We Mark Our Ballot:For State Senate

For the first time since 1977, the 1st District will not be represented in the State Senate by Kenneth LaValle, who is retiring after a legendary career. That puts a lot of pressure on his successor, and on the voters who have to choose him or her. It is, sincerely, a difficult choice. Both candidates are attorneys, but in so many other ways they differ on key issues. Who is the one to carry on the work of Mr. LaValle? There is no wrong answer, and settling on a candidate was this year’s biggest challenge. But, in the end, Republican ... 27 Oct 2020 by Staff Writer

We Mark Our Ballot: The Props

There are two questions on the November 3 ballot from Suffolk County. Our position is that “no” is the proper way to mark the ballot in both instances. Proposition 1 would change the term of office for Suffolk County legislators from two to four years, beginning with those taking office in 2022. Extending terms is often a sensible move, because it allows elected officials to spend more time on governance and less on the bothersome business of campaigning, and raising money. But county legislator campaigns are far from onerous and should never be a major distraction for office-holders. At the ... by Staff Writer

We Mark Our Ballot: For Congress

Nancy Goroff is our enthusiastic choice for the 1st District seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. The Democratic newcomer is not just an acceptable alternative to the incumbent, Republican Lee Zeldin, she is, in nearly every way, the better choice to represent the region at the dawn of a new decade, and perhaps a new era. Much has been made of the fact that her election would send a scientist to Congress. No question, sending a woman of science as a representative would be a strong statement from a region where science is so critically important — in education, ... by Staff Writer

South Fork Police Departments Continue To Investigate High End Car Thefts

South Fork Police departments continue to be confounded by two things: the sheer volume of car thefts in the area and the surprising number of vehicle owners who continue to leave their cars unlocked, with the keys or key fobs inside. Southampton Town Police reported two thefts in their blotter this week. A resident from Cedar Lane in Westhampton said on October 23 that someone entered his driveway and stole his vehicle sometime during the overnight hours. Southampton Town Police said the car was unlocked with the ignition key left inside. They furnished no further details of the theft. In ... by Kitty Merrill

An Early Harvest

It is not uncommon for fall to look and feel like spring. This is what fogs are for: to fool us. During a foggy spell — they can last several days — you cannot tell morning from night, or east from west. A dense fog, like the ones Sagaponack is known for, closes all but the immediate foreground. For the farmer, it is time travel; when all but the immediate foreground is withheld, the expanse beyond is familiar and infinite — those fields. Silk from unseen worms catch the air’s moisture, and silver lines from tree to tree, to earth, ... by Marilee Foster
