Bridgehampton School Kindergarten students recently received a special delivery. After writing letters to children’s book author/illustrator Jan Brett, she sent back a package filled with favorites to the class. “We are excited to read them all,” teacher Elizabeth Kirwan said. Kindergarten students were also commended for their well-received presentation on teamwork and cooperation. Secondary special education teacher Joseph Pluta was recommended and approved for tenure at a recent Board of Education meeting. Hayground School The senior learners residency at the Watermill Center concluded at the end of January with their in-progress performance of “Mything in Action: A Performance of Myth.” Together the students built worlds and created characters for those worlds. They took inspiration from Neil Gaiman’s Norse Mythology and his Master Class on Writing, as well as the grounds of The Watermill Center. The final performance was conceived of by artists Bran and Lora, which breathed life into their writing. The culmination of all of their hard work was indeed a celebration of mythology. Springs School The Springs School i-tri girls have been meeting once a week after school. They participate in an empowerment activity, and then do some fitness activities. They are gearing up for their annual triathlon this summer. The PTA recently held its annual junior high ice-skating night at Buckskill Winter Club. Students skated for free, thanks to funds raised by last November’s Turkey Trot. The PTA also held a hot-dog sale last week. Bridgehampton School Students in Henry Meyer’s seventh grade social studies classes conducted a mock primary to learn more about the process. The eighth and 11th grade American history classes participated in a mock stock market game. Students had a fixed amount of money with which to “buy” stocks for companies and then waited a month to see how their investments turned out. Eighth-grader George Caguana won with a strong investment in Tesla, and junior Nicholas Saunders won with a mix of investments in Amazon, Google and Tesla. Hayground School In preparation for Soul Food Night this week Erin O’Connor’s and Kevin Foran’s class read the book “It Jes Happened: When Bill Traylor Started to Draw” by Don Tate and R. Gregory Christie. Bill Traylor grew up enslaved in Alabama and eventually became a sharecropper on the land on which he was raised. At the age of 81, unable to work anymore and missing all of the activity of his younger life, he began to draw. Bridgehampton School Juniors and seniors recently attended a full-day poetry writing workshop at the Watermill Center. The third annual event was led by English teacher Tom House. Students toured the center and listened to an introduction about its history and programs before selecting one of hundreds of fascinating objects from around the world in the center’s archives room to write ekphrastic poems – poems that take art or objects as their subject or inspiration. Hayground School Marybeth Pacilio’s and R.J. Partington’s class has been focused on writing. Throughout the fall, students drafted stories and are now revising for future publication. With Ralph Fletcher’s “How Writers Work” as their guiding text, the class has been considering various concrete ways to improve their work. The class has been identifying the qualities of good writing, and re-reading their work to find places where they could improve. The students are thinking about word choice, the addition of sensory details, and ways to slow down the action at pivotal moments.
