Up From The Bottom

Where is the bottom?

Time and again, Donald Trump has done something to make me think, “Oh boy, now he’s done it, this is it, this rips the envelope wide open!”

But it never seems to happen that way. It just goes on and on, and he dives lower and lower, seemingly without any consequences.

I won’t try naming all the times this has occurred, all the Trump travesties, because they have been so many that I’d surely overlook a great number of them and just end up frustrated with myself.

This latest outrage, the attempted intimidation of Georgia’s secretary of state to reverse the result of a democratic election that has already been examined and re-examined, is all on tape in an hour-long telephone call. It gets all my alarms ringing yet one more time — but I’ve learned not to fool myself into thinking that this time will be the one, this thing will bring him down. It just never happens, apparently.

Why, oh why, do we always let this liar, this buffoon, this would-be dictator get away with this stuff? Because we do let him get away with it.

I hope and believe Joe Biden will be certified by Congress as the next president, and inaugurated on January 20, but the mere fact of Donald Trump’s finally and officially losing the election will not be the end of it. He will continue to be a scheming, grasping danger long after he leaves office. We still will have let him get away with everything until he is made to face justice, in a court or courts, for his actions.

Then and only then will Donald Trump finally hit bottom, and only then will this nation begin the long climb from the abyss into which he has dragged us.
