The Westhampton Beach girls indoor track team was among the top teams competing for a Small Schools title on Sunday at Suffolk County Community College in Brentwood. Although they battled as best they could, the Hurricanes finished fourth overall. Bayport-Blue Point took first place, followed by West Babylon and East Islip.
Halle Geller, who was not seeded in the top six coming into the meet, competing in the second to last heat in the preliminaries, wound up finishing second overall in the 55-meter dash in 7.67 seconds. She was the only freshman to reach the finals.
Valerie Finke placed second in the 300-meter dash in 43.34 seconds and placed third in the 55-meter hurdles (9.24 seconds). Both the 4x200- and 4x400-meter relay teams placed second. Geller, Finke, Trinity Valenzuela and Sintia Gregorio ran the 4x2 and finished in 1:54.10. Anabelle Vellosa, Lily Strebel, Mia Valenzuela and Mackenzie Schindler finished the 4x4 in 4:22.92.
Strebel placed sixth in the 600-meter run in 1:44.48. Keira Falvey (3:14.23) and Rose Hayes (3:15.94) placed fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 1,000-meter race.
Westhampton Beach girls head coach John Broich said Geller in the 55, Finke in the 300 or 55 hurdles and the team’s 4x2 and 4x4 relay teams should all make it to the state qualifier, which is this Monday night back at Suffolk-Brentwood. The team’s 4x8 relay team could sneak in he said along with a few of the mid-distance runners.
Gavin Ehlers was Small Schools champion in the 3,200-meter boys race on Saturday at Suffolk-Brentwood. He crossed the finish line in 9:24.38 and was followed by teammate Max Haynia who finished in 9:35.69. Trevor Hayes finished third in the 1,600-meter race in 4:32.38. Will Barry placed fifth in the shot put with a throw of 44 feet 3 ¾ inches.
Westhampton Beach boys head coach Joe Mensch said all of his runners should be at state quals and it’ll be close if Barry gets a chance in the shot.
Hampton Bays senior Timothy Kraycar placed third in the shot put with a throw of 45 feet 8 ½ inches and should be the lone Bayman representative at state quals.
Maxwell Garcia placed sixth in the 600-meter run in 1:30.61. Arents Hansen competed in the 1,000-meter race in which he placed 13th in 2:58.60. Charlie Garcia finished 12th in the triple jump with a leap of 36 feet 8 inches and finished 18th in the long jump with a 17-foot-1 ¾ inch leap.
