A Very Big Mouth

Many southern and western Republicans don’t trust science, even though they view Trump as their leader. He helped achieve the COVID-19 vaccine, but it wasn’t by himself — he needed scientists. So I don’t understand his decision to not promote vaccinations. After all, both he and Melania were vaccinated. I know he believed that coal and oil had to be saved from the renewable movement; that’s the real reason he dropped out of the Paris Agreement. But why let this epidemic continue when he could do something about it? We know the vaccinations work and that to get to herd ... by Staff Writer

A Suggestion

I was so pleased to attend the Southampton Arts Center’s opening display this past Saturday. Wow! What a fine display, so fresh and inspiring. Individual expression yet cohesive in content. Wonderful! Thank you. I have a suggestion: It would be advantageous to the entire community if you would provide better access for handicapped people. Stairs defeat me. How about if you finish the brick walk that dissects the front garden? Make that gateway easier to navigate. This is our year to return to some sort of normal. The village seems to be coming back to life. I applaude this positive ... by Staff Writer

Oblivious

Having had the singularly nasty experience of appearing before the Southampton Village Planning Board when it was chaired by Roy Stevenson, I find it more than lamentable that he ran for and won election and is now a trustee of the Village of Southampton. When he headed up the Planning Board, he was both predisposed and unprepared. Dour, uninformed, unswayed by argument, and observed being prompted by nods from the “audience.” When I and others spoke, he could not keep his disdain and impatience in check and held firmly to the “three-minute” speech allotment rule. Who could blame him? He ... by Staff Writer

How Much Longer?

As I sat in on my first advisory committee meeting, something I’ve unfortunately not been able to attend previously due to other obligations I had with the fire department, my ears were perked when I got to hear our esteemed supervisor speak about the communication tower in Springs [“East Hampton Town Proposes 185-Foot Cell Tower In Springs,” 27east.com, July 14]. What version of the story would come out as he was to tell his tale? I was more than amazed to hear a variation that had been alluded to previously in the papers. Each time, though, the short end of ... by Staff Writer

Nothing But Hot Air

Let’s give credit where credit is due. Recognizing the impact of the pandemic on families, President Joe Biden and the Democratic Congress built into the American Relief Plan aid to American families with children. The Biden plan provides for advanced child tax credit payments directly to normal people’s bank accounts. Americans with kids over 6 get $3,000; those with kids under 6 will get more. The first of these checks are already on their way. I’m guessing lots of people are breathing a sigh of relief. The genius of the Biden plan is the inroads being made into “populist” terrain ... by Staff Writer
