Why Now?

It strikes me as highly ironic that the longest-serving Village of Sag Harbor trustee, James Larocca, is now calling for a comprehensive villagewide plan review — after some six years as a Village Board member [“Sag Harbor Needs To Tap The Brakes,” Viewpoint, February 4].

This is a needed study, but why, after so long in the position of pushing such a study through, is he now calling for one?

The current board was in favor of this two years ago, but funding and then COVID-19 got in the way.

Mr. Larocca certainly had the time and energy to shepherd in Steinbeck Park, including the now-under-construction condos adjacent to the park during his tenure. Now, with this very controversial construction well underway, he is promoting a villagewide review, and a hold on zoning review?

Mr. Larocca seems to have supported the park and condo projects, without regard to the type of overall planning that he now suggests is overdue.

I’m not sure that Mr. Larocca is cognizant of the speed at which development can occur, nor does he seem to distinguish between free-market enterprise and the power of the Board of Trustees over private developers under any zoning code. To suggest that a construction project be moved to a parcel more to his liking is an exercise in grandiosity.

I’m in absolute agreement with a long-term study, but not at the expense of irreversible damage to the community in the short term.
