Amagansett Community Notes, December 22

Dec 18, 2011 5:23 PM

So here we are, the last weeks of 2011. Happy birthday to Kelly White, Marcie Angel, Liz Pucci, Bob Pucci, Susan DiSunno and Samantha Merritt. Merry Christmas Happy Hanukkah, and Happy New Year.

See you at the Polar Bear Plunge Sunday, January 1, 2012, at 1 p.m. at Main Beach in East Hampton.

Please come ready to plunge or to make a donation to the food pantry and cheer on all the plungers, including my daughter, Lucy Pearl. Hot chocolate will be served and T-shirts will be sold.

With all the hustle-bustle in the hamlet, don’t forget the true spirit is all about giving. When buying all your presents think of making a donation to someone or ones less fortunate or a good cause.

The Hampton Lifeguard Association is one of those causes. Anyone wishing to make a tax deductible donation can email John Ryan Sr. at jryan@optonline.net or call him at 324-2787. The association trains our lifeguards and runs the junior lifeguard program, which trains our next generation of lifeguards.

The Amagansett satellite of the East Hampton Food Pantry is open on Tuesdays from 4 to 6 p.m. at St. Michael’s Lutheran Church. Volunteers and donations are always welcome.

I hope you have enjoyed all the holiday festivities in the hamlet.

The Amagansett Free library is having a “Record a Family Memory” workshop on Wednesday, December 28, at 6 p.m. This program was inspired by the Story Corps interviews, which are heard on NPR. Now Story Corps is asking all Americans to start a new holiday tradition to set aside time to interview a friend, loved one or someone in the community about their life. The workshop will go over the steps, demonstrate the equipment and discuss some favorite interview questions. You then have the option to bring loved ones in for a 45-minute recording session sometime on Thursday, Friday or Saturday, December 29 to 31. Call 267-3810 in advance to discuss and reserve your time. This is a great opportunity to get a loved one on tape to cherish for always.

There will be a “New Moms Open House” at the library on Tuesday, January 3, at 4 p.m. Come celebrate with coffee and cookies and meet other new moms. For more information please contact Jeanne McDermott at 267-3810.

The First Presbyterian Church of Amagansett will hold a special candlelight service at 7 p.m. on Christmas Eve. The Christmas Day worship service will take place at 11 a.m.

St Michael’s Lutheran Church will have its Christmas worship service Sunday at 11 a.m.

Please check the listings in this paper for other special goings on at the churches for the holidays.

In school news, winter recess is from December 26 to January 3, 2012. Enjoy the time off.

Free chess clinics begin on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Youth Park beginning January 3 from 4 to 5 p.m. for players in grades one through five. Winter wrestling for boys in second through eighth grade begins on Tuesday, January 3, and will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. in the in the wrestling room at East Hampton High School. Register at the Department of Parks. The fee is $40. For more information please contact Joe Russo at 329-6633 or 903-0017.

Enjoy your holidays and families and friends and our beautiful hamlet. Please send me any Amagansett news you would like to share.
