Peaceful Protest Held In Bridgehampton A Day After Violence Erupts At 'Unite The Right' Rally In Virginia

Sunday’s inaugural Bridgehampton Day, a celebration of unity and pride, morphed into a demonstration of solidarity and support in the wake of violent events—including three deaths—at Saturday’s “Unite The Right” rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.

“The protest got added on as a vigil for what happened yesterday,” Bridgehampton Day organizer Willie Jenkins explained during Sunday’s event, saying that the protest was originally going to be held in Sag Harbor but was later moved to Bridgehampton.

He added, “We’re here to fight the injustice. This is an African-American community down here, so it made sense to combine the events.”

Nearly 50 people streamed into the Bridgehampton Child Care and Recreational Center parking lot as the Bridgehampton Day activities—including a raffle, basketball game and barbecue—were coming to a close, carrying signs calling for peace and a rooting out of the hateful rhetoric that sparked Saturday’s violence in Charlottesville.

“We stand in solidarity with the anti-protesters, those that were killed, those that were hurt,” said Bonnie Cannon, executive director of the Bridgehampton Child Care and Recreational Center. “We want everyone to know that here in Bridgehampton and Southampton, we are with you.”

Demonstrators held hands and offered prayers for the woman and two police officers who died amid Saturday’s clashes between white nationalists and counter-protesters. Nearly two dozen counter-protesters were injured after a car driven by a man later identified by authorities as 20-year-old James Alex Fields Jr. of Ohio plowed his vehicle into a line of cars, killing Heather Heyer, a 32-year-old counter-protester who lived in the city. Two Virginia State Police officers, Berke M.M. Bates and H. Jay Cullen, were killed when their helicopter crashed on the outskirts of Charlottesville while they were on duty in connection with the response to the protests, according to reports.

Those participating in Sunday’s rally in Bridgehampton lined the stretch of the Bridgehampton-Sag Harbor Turnpike outside of the center, waving to cars and chanting “Love trumps hate!” and “No place for hate!”

Many protesters said they were motivated not only by the deaths and violent clashes in Virginia the day prior, but also by what they described as lackluster reactions from President Donald Trump and other local elected leaders. It was not until Monday, two days after the vehicular assault that many have labeled as domestic terrorism, that Mr. Trump relented to building pressure that he personally condemn the white supremacists who spurred the violent and deadly demonstrations on Saturday.

“Racism is evil,” Mr. Trump said while reading a statement from the White House on Monday. “And those who cause violence in its name are criminals and thugs, including the KKK, neo-Nazis, white supremacists and other hate groups that are repugnant to everything we hold dear as Americans.”

Those words were in sharp contrast to those delivered in the hours immediately after the deadly assault, where Mr. Trump appears to have gone out of his way to avoid specifically blaming the white nationalist groups that incited the bloody skirmishes. “We condemn in the strongest possible terms this egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence, on many sides. On many sides,” he said, in part, on Saturday.

Shortly after Mr. Trump’s original observations, U.S. Representative Lee Zeldin released his own more definitive statement on the events in Charlottesville. “These violent acts inspired by deep hatred are disgusting, un-American, and unwelcome in our great nation,” Mr. Zeldin says in a statement released by his communications director, Jennifer DiSiena. “Differences will always exist and it is OK to disagree in America, but the violence taking place today in Charlottesville is absolutely not the right way to disagree with each other.

“We can and must do more to unite as a nation,” he continued. “There must be zero tolerance whatsoever for the extremes that try to tear us all apart. Patriotic Americans of all walks of life must come together and bridge those divides for the sake of our country and our people.”

Still, many who had gathered in Bridgehampton on Sunday to reflect on the prior day’s events said they do not believe those words went far enough in condemning the actions and motivations of white supremacists in Charlottesville and beyond.

“We came to the vigil to be with others horrified both by the white supremacist movement and its effects in Charlottesville, and by our president and congressman’s refusal to call out Nazis and other white supremacists,” said Diane Englander of Southampton and New York City.

Bryony Freij, a Sag Harbor resident and member of Solidarity Sundays on the East End, a local chapter of a nationwide network of feminist groups, shared similar motivations when reached on Monday. “I came out yesterday with my husband and three young children to stand in solidarity with those who stood up to hate in Charlottesville, and to condemn the president and our Congressman Lee Zeldin’s weak responses to the violence,” she said. “Their inability to name ‘white terrorism’ is shameful.”

Mara Gerstein of East Hampton, accompanied by her friend, Hannah Rosenzweig, and their two young daughters, also felt the need to hold elected officials accountable. “We came out to stand in solidarity with those protesters who put their lives on the line in Charlottesville,” Ms. Gerstein said.

On Monday night, Mr. Zeldin defended his prior statement, noting that he pulled no punches when it came to criticizing those responsible for the violence in Virginia.

“My statement specifically singles out those who associate with the KKK and Nazism, and their hatred and bigotry,” the congressman said. “I was specific and sent out multiple different statements on Saturday through Facebook, Twitter and email. There is no way anyone can come to the conclusion that I wasn’t specific in my comments unless they picked some of my words and ignored the rest.”

Though he was critical of Mr. Trump’s original statement, Eastern Long Island NAACP President Lucius Ware praised both Mr. Zeldin and U.S. Representative Peter King, another congressman representing Long Island, for their immediate remarks and observations.

“I am encouraged to see that people like Lee Zeldin and Congressman King, who are certainly far away from my own political views, have come out strongly against what happened in Charlottesville,” said Mr. Ware, who did not attend Sunday’s gathering in Bridgehampton.

Louie Bull of Springs, one of the youngest attendees at Sunday’s event, summed up his motivations without even opening his chocolate-smeared mouth. When asked why he was protesting, he simply held up his handmade cardboard sign, bearing a single word: “Love.”

Where were all you big mouths on the left when cops were killed by BLM members because of Obamas rhetoric? The left should of let these Nazi screwballs have their free speech, and ignored them. No sane person believes in their bs. Ironically they are tearing down civil war statues to make believe the civil war never happened. We need to be reminded of civil Wars, and Nazi's, and how they are dangerous, real, and repeatable. Lets stop candy coating history it is dangerous!

Robert E. Lee was a general who ran the rebel army who lost the war to preserve slavery based on skin color.

Here is another thought for y'all:
"Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal...We here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain -- that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom -- and that government of the people, ...more

The double standard is obvious. President Trump as only pointed out the truth and in doing so he has destroyed the fake news narrative the far left radicals perpetrate. That's why the left lost their collective minds! President Trump calling them out changes the game completely. Trump pushed the reset button. No more free pass for either side.the supremest groups have been put on notice. June is pissed that the main stream medias practice of no acknowledgment or moral outrage about Antifa or BLMs ...more

to HHS: You're to be commended for your efforts in the impossible task of convincing those who've been captured by the forces that perpetuate unfounded lies contrary to all reality all in the interest of division and in maintaining power. There is no reasoning with whatever the synapses are that comprise the brains of those on this list with contrary views of the world. Miracles do occur, so maybe your efforts will eventually win a heart or a mind.

Well now that they finally got rid of those violence causing statues the killings will finally stop. So many killed on the streets of Baltimore and all this time I thought it was gang and drug violence when this whole time it was statues of Lee and Stone wall. Glad to hear there will finally be peace on the progressive plantation.

We all agree that the Klan and the neo Nazis are hate filled idiots that use violence and intimidation to get their message out , correct? Antifa is a bunch of idiots that use violence to spread their message , agreed? BLM is where it gets sticky for the left, they are also violent and anti law enforcement, not sure why that's ignored. Extremists are on the fringe of society, where they belong.
