Astronomer To Talk About Mysteries Of Time and Place

Dr. David John Helfand, former president of Quest University Canada and past chair of Columbia University’s astronomy department, will give a lecture Tuesday, Aug. 19, at the East Hampton Library. The event, hosted by the Hamptons Observatory, begins at 7 p.m.
Helfand will discuss his latest book, The Universal Timekeepers: Reconstructing History Atom by Atom, which explores how science can uncover the histories of distant times and places once thought unreachable. A book signing will follow the talk, and copies will be available for purchase.

Tour Of Halsey House Offered

The Southampton History Museum will offer guided tours of the colonial-era Halsey House on Thursday, August 21, providing insight into life in 1640, when English settlers first landed at Conscience Point and encountered the Shinnecock people. Two tour times are available: 11 a.m. to noon and 2 to 3 p.m. Participants will learn how the early colonists adapted to a new environment, spending eight formative years in their first settlement at Olde Towne before expanding to establish Southampton’s Main Street in 1648. Open House at Firehouse

The Westhampton Beach Fire Department will host an open house at the firehouse on Sunset Avenue on Sunday, August 17, from 2 to 5 p.m. The family-friendly event will include water games, rescue demonstrations, equipment exhibits and fire truck rides. Fire extinguisher training and fire safety demonstrations will also be offered. Children will receive free firefighter helmets; food, refreshments, and ice cream will be available for all.
