Stelle Lomont Rouhani Architects Win AIA Awards

Stelle Lomont Rouhani Architects recently won two Awards from the American Institute of Architects Long Island Chapter.

The Bridgehampton-based architectural firm earned the AIA Excellence in Architecture Archi Award, for the Bluff Hollow project in Montauk and the AIA Excellence in Architecture Commendation Award for the Art Port project in Water Mill. Members of the firm were on hand to receive the awards at a ceremony at Oheka Castle in Huntington on October 23.

The Bluff Hollow studio, built in 1980 as part of a retreat for a well-known photographer and his family, was renovated in 2013. In its previous incarnation, it served as pin-up area for the photographer’s work and a writing studio for his son.

According to information provided by Stelle Lomont Rouhani Architects, the studio’s character as a retreat is preserved in the peaceful contemplative quality of the space and new arrangement. Finishes were chosen to be recessive and have a calming effect for short-term guests. Surfboards suspended from the ceiling refer to the location and orientation of the present owners and family.

The Art Port is a free-standing pavilion created for an art dealer as an addition to an existing house. Formed from a single flat roof that rests on two solid volumes, it is separated from the main residence by a bamboo garden. A wood walkway slices through the garden creating a physical connection between the pavilion and the main house.

The simple open plan of the pavilion provides versatility, easily transforming into an impromptu art gallery. Large glass openings welcome the outside in. The pavilion creates the perfect backdrop to events, where the architecture and landscape highlight the installations, according to materials provided by the architectural firm.
