Erin O’Connor and Mbachi Kumwenda’s class has begun a large collage project. They used paper they had painted at the beginning of the school year and tore and cut it into smaller pieces. These pieces have been glued to large pieces of poster board. Their next step will be to create people, trees, buildings, etc. to inhabit their collages. They are looking at the work of Romare Bearden as an inspiration. Specifically the class is looking at “The Block,” a 4’x8ʼ collage of a city block in Harlem. Romare Bearden was an African-American artist who used paint and collage to tell the stories of the places he lived and the people who lived there.
