Spring is in the air! The green leaves of daffodils are sprouting higher each day and my evergreen Oregon grape holly (Mahonia aquifolium) has finished flowering. Its abundant seeds will soon become bright purple berries, providing food for my songbirds at a time of year when there is not a lot of food around. I could not be happier!

Even the Eastern Long Island Audubon Society is in its springtime-mode with a presentation at this month’s meeting entitled “Soil Makes a Garden Grow.” Master gardener and Green Guerilla graduate Roxanne Zimmer will discuss ways to improve soil vitality, as well as the quality of our air and water.
