What a difference a year makes. In last winter’s columns, I impatiently counted down the days until spring and, this year, spring’s arrival almost surprised me. And, as I meandered my garden paths on Sunday afternoon, a black swallowtail butterfly and an unidentifiable “friend” amazed me with their tentative flights of fancy.
I am so excited for our hamlet that I cannot wait to share this with you! The Beachside Bagel Café will be opening on Monday, April 2, on Main Street. Along with super-delicious bagels, breakfast treats will run the gamut from French toast and pancakes to scrambled eggs and omelets. Lunch will feature wraps and hot paninis, as well as traditional sandwiches.
I know that the atmosphere will be warm and friendly as the owners—Laurie and Nick Iaccone, and Dottie and Jimmy Ferrentino—are all part of the Iaccone family. Their parents, Carl and Fran, are dear friends who were very instrumental in returning my favorite East End icon—the Big Duck—to its original roost in Flanders.
And speaking of our Main Street stores, congratulations go out to Jane and Harry Dalien, the owners of East Quogue Wines and Liquor, on the opening of their new bigger and better store. Selections are larger and prices are lower. Check out their community specials (which end in late April) on Cavit, Woodbridge and Yellow Tail wines.
Happy (belated) birthday wishes go to one of my favorite “kids.” Jacqui Kandell turned 17 last Thursday, March 15.
Frank Lutz was honored by the East Quogue Fire Department on Monday, March 12, for his long and outstanding service to our community. During the 65 years that he has volunteered, Frank has served as fire commissioner and fire chief, as well as an EMT and a member of the Fire Police. Shirley, his wife of 70 years, together with their daughters, Carla and Jacqueline, were there to help him celebrate. Congratulations, Frank!
