Thomas Gerard Bennett of East Quogue died at his home on September 15, 2017. He was 60.

Born on April 17, 1957, to Joseph and Irene Bennett in Southampton, “Weed” Bennett, as he was known by friends and family, was one of eight children raised in a close-knit Irish Catholic family. He was a beloved member of the Southampton community, survivors said, working as a carpenter for his father’s business starting at age 16. He continued this trade for more than 40 years and took great pride in his work.

It was in Southampton where he met Debbie, who would become his wife of 30 years. They moved to East Quogue, where they raised their two children, Emily and Molly.

He had many hobbies, including gardening, running 5K races, watching his favorite sports teams—the New York Mets, the New York Giants and NASCAR—and listening to the Grateful Dead. Survivors describe him as a gentle soul with a big heart who was endlessly proud of his family and their accomplishments.

Mr. Bennett is survived by his wife, Debbie Bennett; and two daughters, Emily and Molly Bennett. He is also survived by four sisters, Peggy Mezynieski and husband Sam of Southampton, Patricia Bennett of Hampton Bays, Sharon Catena and husband Gary of Hampton Bays, Mary Behringer of Southampton; two brothers, Joseph Bennett of Vermont, William Bennett and wife Danuta of Southampton; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; and a sister, Sheila Bennett-Duryea, of Hampton Bays.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the O’Connell-Rothwell Funeral Home in Southampton.

Skip the Stuff

When it comes to changing the world, some things are easier to do than others. The region has done some sweeping things with an eye toward the environment. After a few false starts, Southampton Town and East Hampton Town helped lead the way with a ban on plastic grocery bags, which eventually spread to Suffolk County, and, in 2020, to all of New York State. For a while, the idea that people might stop relying on free plastic bags and — horrors! — bring their own reusable bags to the grocery store seemed unreasonably ambitious. Today, it’s an afterthought for ... by Editorial Board

We’re Waiting

The eight stations on the Montauk Branch between Speonk and Montauk generally, on a weekday, will see 10 trains stop throughout a 24-hour period. The problem: Only half are between the hours of 6 a.m. and 6 p.m., presumably when most people might actually use the train to ride from local stop to local stop. The South Fork Commuter Connection went a long way toward improving the usefulness of the LIRR for a daily commute, making sure there were reasonable morning and afternoon options for east-west commuters, and adding in shuttle buses to get workers from the buses to their ... by Editorial Board
