Melanie Lynn Erwin of East Quogue died on September 5, 2018. She was 27.

Ms. Erwin attended East Quogue Elementary School and graduated from Westhampton Beach High School in 2008. She went on to attend vocational school and obtained her medical assistant certificate, as well as phlebotomy and EKG certificates. Her favorite job was as a patient care technician at Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead. She also worked at the Southampton Town Clerk office for a short time but was forced to leave both jobs, as well as others, because of long illnesses. At the time of her death, she was doing some home care for elderly, sick or handicapped persons. Survivors said she was a very caring person, always reaching out to help others.

She could often be found at the beach with her dog, Cali, searching for beach glass and driftwood. She had an extensive collection of both, and made gifts for friends and family with some of her findings.

Ms. Erwin is survived by her parents, Michael Erwin and Denise Bentz Erwin of East Quogue; and her older brother, Joseph M. Erwin of Virginia; her paternal grandmother, Joan Murray of Remsenburg; and her maternal grandfather, Richard Bentz and wife Liz of Massachusetts. She is also survived by many aunts and uncles and their families, which include 20 first cousins and their families. She was predeceased by a sister, Emily Anne Erwin.

Services were under the direction of the R.J. O’Shea Funeral Home in Hampton Bays. Interment was at Oakwood Cemetery in East Quogue on September 11.

AI and Writer’s Detour

I heard an English professor extolling the virtue of artificial intelligence and how his students could use it to overcome a condition he called writer’s block. Good luck. Before AI, there were other ways of coping with WB. The most successful strategy being struggling through: keep looking, keep scribbling. Getting up and going for a short walk is still the healthiest choice. And smoking, though ... by Marilee Foster
