An elderly man was airlifted to the hospital on Saturday afternoon after he crashed his car while trying to avoid a deer in Flanders, according to Southampton Town Police.Alfred Lopez, 89, of Riverhead was driving east on Flanders Road at around 2:30 p.m. when he swerved to avoid a deer and veered across the opposite lane of traffic and off the road, crashing into a traffic light post, a sign and a utility pole before coming to a stop in the woods near Whitebrook Drive, according to authorities.Mr. Lopez, who was the only occupant of the 1994 Toyota sedan, suffered serious injuries in the single-car accident, according to Flanders-Northampton Volunteer Ambulance Chief Ronald Hintze. The ambulance company transported Mr. Lopez to the Suffolk County Center in Riverside, where a Suffolk County Police medevac transported him to Stony Brook University Hospital.Eastbound traffic along Flanders Road was diverted for about 30 minutes Saturday while police cleared the accident scene.
