Jeep Submerged At Georgica Pond On Sunday

Oct 28, 2014 12:48 PM

A Jeep driver took a dip at Georgica Pond in Wainscott on Sunday afternoon—and brought the vehicle along.

East Hampton Town Police Chief Michael Sarlo said the driver and a passenger were heading west, driving on the beach, and thought the water in the cut from the opening of the pond to the ocean was shallow enough to pass through—but clearly misjudged the depth.

The driver and the passenger were uninjured and managed to safely exit the car and call for assistance, the chief said. At approximately 12:50 p.m., the town’s marine division responded and removed the vehicle from the water. The Jeep sustained extensive water damage, Chief Sarlo said, declining to identify the driver.

The East Hampton Town Trustees opened up the cut at Georgica Pond on October 15, as they usually do, Trustee Clerk Diane McNally said on Tuesday.

And while there are no signs alerting drivers that the cut is now open, Ms. McNally said she was surprised the driver thought it was possible to drive through the opening: “We don’t put up any signs, but we figure … when people see water, they won’t drive through it.”

No Darwin Award possible, as award recipients must actually perish due to their own (genetic) foolishness.

Yes, don't share a sober person's identity when they've done something stupid... We only judge by newspaper/WLNG when someone is pre-trial for DWIs, etc..

Some people take the car commercials to seriously. Does insurance pay out for stupidity?

I can only hope they were drunk - if a sober person thought that was driveable (in the daylight!), they should not be on the road
