Start Of Beach Rebuilding Delayed Again By Bad Weather

Oct 11, 2013 1:47 PM
Weather conditions have again delayed the start of the massive beach reconstruction project that was set to begin Thursday in Bridgehampton.

High seas and high winds are forecast through the weekend and the company conducting the sand-transfer work, Great Lakes Dredge & Dock, now expects work will not begin until early next week. The dredge is not able to operate if seas are over 5-feet in height.

The project has already been delayed by poor weather for nearly a week. The 300-foot dredging vessel is anchored in Shinnecock Bay awaiting the right conditions for it to begin work.

Once the work begins the dredge will excavate sand from designated areas of sea floor a mile offshore and pump it onto the beaches.

Over the next three months the project will transfer more than 3 million tons of sand onto a six-mile stretch of shoreline between Flying Point in Water Mill and Townline Road in Sagaponack.

Most of the cost of the work, which could be as much as $26 million, is to be paid for by homeowners who live along the oceantfront. Southampton Town, which owns five public beaches in the project zone is contributing $1.5 million.

If they have to lug that equipment back to Shinnecock each time there is a storm, its going to be a while until this project is complete folks. I hope the price is locked in and not subject to overruns. What are the bouys doing?

"The 300-foot dredging vessel is anchored in Shinnecock Bay awaiting the right conditions for it to begin work." Sounds like it has not moved yet.
