Maverick Passaro led the Eastport South Manor wrestling team this winter to its most successful season in program history. He was League V and Suffolk County champion before winning the New York State Championship at 126 pounds. He is the school’s first state champion.
Many other ESM wrestlers had good seasons as well. Jimmy Leach placed sixth in the county after finishing second in the League V Tournament. Travis Passaro was a League V Champion and Fumnanya Agbimson placed second at leagues. Jared Usher placed third at the league meet while Niko Bedell, Kris Cassara, Nick Garone, Dylan Kane and Matt Moore all finished fourth to earn All-League honors.
The ESM boys bowling team had a successful season as it went undefeated to win the League V championship. Dallas Hayes, Quentin Montemarano, Doug Pinelli and Brian O’Sullivan were all named first team All-League for being in the top five of League V. Pinelli boasted the highest average in the league with a 194.92 and also rolled the highest game, a 279. O’Sullivan had the highest series in the league with a 718 (233-258-227), and also had the most match points in League V with 29 head-to-head points.
The ESM girls bowling team was led by Gina Chinese and Shelby Rosen this past winter. Both Chinese and Rosen earned All-League honors for their efforts. Rosen was a match-play winner and Lindsey Shine won the Sportsmanship Award.
The boys basketball team won its first playoff game, defeating Connetquot, before falling to William Floyd in the following round. Floyd would go on to win the Class AA county title. Dalton McCarthy earned All-League, All-Conference and All-County honors while Ryan Curley earned All-League and All-Conference status. Logan Frati was named Academic All-County.
The girls basketball team also made the playoffs and knocked off Bellport in the opening round. But the Lady Sharks lost at Lindenhurst in the second round. Dene DiMartino, Stephanie Gratto and Samantha Giacolone were all named All-League while DiMartino and Gratto, along with Kristen Webber, earned Academic All-County honors.
Adam Malone led the ESM boys winter track team this past winter and was Suffolk County Champion in the triple jump. For the girls team, Briana Hayes earned both All-County and All-League honors. Laura Diehl, Briana Siele, Nicole Schafer and Rebecca Tooker were all named All-League.
The girls basketball, boys and girls bowling, and boys and girls indoor track teams were all named Scholar-Athlete teams. Girls bowling was awarded the Sportsmanship Award.
Alex Tanzman had the best season ever in Westhampton Beach wrestling history as he became the first Hurricane to place at the New York State Championship. Tanzman placed third at 99 pounds after having already won the Suffolk County and League VI championships.
Tyler Yastrub earned All-League honors after placing second at the League VI Tournament. Kyle Maddock, Bryan Curry, Ben Zeqiri and Sean Ryan all placed third at the league meet while Peter Broccoli, Liam Bass and Sebastian Antonio all placed fourth to earn All-League honors as well.
Annica Penn became an All-American this past winter when she placed third at the New Balance Indoor Nationals at the Armory Track & Field Center in New York City. She had placed second at the State Championships a week before to earn All-State status. She was also All-County, All-Conference and All-League.
Gabrielle Mason was also an All-County athlete this past winter and earned All-Conference and All-League distinctions. Coryn Cange and Stephanie Vickers were named All-Conference and All-League.
For the boys indoor track team, Graham Brown and Greg Horbatiuk were named All-League.
The Westhampton Beach girls basketball team was ousted in the first round of the Class A playoffs by Amityville. Kristen Polan led the Lady Hurricanes all season and was named All-County, All-Conference and All-League, as well as Academic All-County. She finished her high school career with 1,171 points and was also a senior scholarship recipient. Haley Laube earned All-League honors.
The Hampton Bays girls basketball team finished the regular season with a 9-3 record in League VII, 14-4 overall, to finish second in Class B. The Lady Baymen nearly upset Southampton in the Class B finals, but the Lady Mariners completed a fourth-quarter comeback to take the county title.
Theresa Carey, Andrea Tufano and Alexis Fotopoulos all earned All-League honors this season. Carey scored more than 1,000 points during her career at Hampton Bays and finished her senior season as one of the top 10 scorers in the county. Fotopoulos finished in the top 10 in the county in three-point shots made.
