Retired Suffolk County Correctional Officer Marc L. Dimon Dies July 16

author on Jul 24, 2017

Retired Suffolk County Correctional Officer Marc L. Dimon died at his home in Southampton on July 16, 2017, from a heart attack and complications of recently diagnosed T-cell lymphoma. He was 67 and at the time of his death he was receiving chemotherapy treatment at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital in Manhattan.

Mr. Dimon was born on March 11, 1950, at Southampton Hospital. He graduated from Southampton High School in 1968 and attended Suffolk County Community College for two years, concentrating on electronics. After returning to Southampton from Brooklyn, where he worked at the Fort Greene Meat Market, he married his high school sweetheart, Lyn Klemuk, at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Southampton. The couple celebrated their 45th year wedding anniversary this year on June 17.

Mr. Dimon proudly joined the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department as a corrections officer at the Riverhead Correctional Facility, attaining the rank of sergeant. He retired after serving 31 years.

He was accomplished in many areas of life and enjoyed numerous things in his spare time, including but not limited to vintage cars, saltwater fishing, finding and repairing vintage and contemporary fishing reels, rods, and other tackle associated with fishing.

Southampton history and his family genealogy, which dates back to 1650 in East Hampton, was one of his many interests. He also enjoyed guitars and could identify many different brands and models simply by seeing a player’s instrument on television for a mere second. When not working, scouring yard sales every weekend for fishing tackle and other collectibles was on his agenda. He adored all animals, especially cats and dogs and volunteered his time with his wife, to feeding and providing housing to feral cats.

Mr. Dimon is survived by his wife, Lyn; and daughter, Aura Amy Dimon; his father-in-law and lifetime Southampton resident, John Klemuk; brothers, Paul Dimon of Scotia, Samuel Dimon and wife Carol of Southampton, and Leslie Dimon of East Hampton; a sister, Ann Dimon of Center Moriches; nieces, Michele Swain and husband Ken of Scotia, and Heather Yoder and husband Adam of Ohio; and a nephew Philip Dimon and wife Leanne of Indiana.

He was predeceased by his parents and lifelong Southampton residents, Harris W. Dimon and Lillian E. (Behler) Dimon; and mother-in-law, Norma (Osufsen) Kennedy of Florida; as well as his brother Paul’s wife, Liv (Roislien) Dimon.

Visitation was at the Brockett Funeral Home in Southampton on July 20, with Suffolk County Correction Officers Association honor guard attending. A funeral service officiated by Father Patrick Edwards of St. John’s Episcopal Church was held at the funeral home that evening. Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent DeMarco provided a Suffolk County Deputies’ escorted procession through Southampton Village to the family gravesite at Southampton Cemetery on July 21. A fellowship reception was held at Birchwood of Polish Town in Riverhead following the burial.

Memorial donations may be made to the Happy Cat Sanctuary, Box 688, Coram, New York, or HappyCatSanctuary.org; or to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Skip the Stuff

When it comes to changing the world, some things are easier to do than others. The region has done some sweeping things with an eye toward the environment. After a few false starts, Southampton Town and East Hampton Town helped lead the way with a ban on plastic grocery bags, which eventually spread to Suffolk County, and, in 2020, to all of New York State. For a while, the idea that people might stop relying on free plastic bags and — horrors! — bring their own reusable bags to the grocery store seemed unreasonably ambitious. Today, it’s an afterthought for ... by Editorial Board

We’re Waiting

The eight stations on the Montauk Branch between Speonk and Montauk generally, on a weekday, will see 10 trains stop throughout a 24-hour period. The problem: Only half are between the hours of 6 a.m. and 6 p.m., presumably when most people might actually use the train to ride from local stop to local stop. The South Fork Commuter Connection went a long way toward improving the usefulness of the LIRR for a daily commute, making sure there were reasonable morning and afternoon options for east-west commuters, and adding in shuttle buses to get workers from the buses to their ... by Editorial Board
