The Southampton Town Board is considering an amendment to its rental permit law that would allow short-term stays in the town during special occasions—mainly for large events, such as the U.S. Open golf tournament in Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in June 2018.
Currently, homeowners seeking to rent their homes must agree to do so for a minimum of two weeks. New legislation proposed by Town Supervisor Jay Schneiderman would relax that law, but only if Town Board members were to approve a waiver for individual events.
Mr. Schneiderman noted that there were “no sufficient hotels” to accommodate the sea of people flooding into town for large events like the U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills.
On Tuesday, December 12, at 1 p.m. in Town Hall residents will be given the chance to voice their support and share their concerns about the proposal.
Homeowners would still need rental permits to house short-term guests, according to officials.
