The Suffolk County Water Authority is installing a new pump station along Deerfield Road in Noyac Hills County Park, and clearing a large cluster of trees to accommodate it.

On Monday, SCWA workers were seen clearing nearly 1.17 acres of woodland on a 2.45-acre easement, where Deerwood Path meets Deerfield Road.

“We’re building a new pump station on a county easement,” Tim Motz, the director of communications for the SCWA, said in an email. He added that letters were sent to neighbors and approvals were granted from the State Department of Environmental Conservation.

According to Mr. Motz, the pump station will consist of one well, a blow-off basin and a building where lime and “trace amounts of chlorine” will be added to the pumped water.

The DEC’s website states the well is expected to be buried 200 feet below the ground and will contain a pump capable of pumping water at a rate of 650 gallons per minute.

“The site was chosen because it is a location where the water quality is excellent,” Mr. Motz said. He added the site was also chosen because the facility will be able to integrate into the current water supply and distribution system.

The DEC’s website noted the project is located approximately 535 feet from a breeding pond for the eastern tiger salamander, an endangered species that required a take permit. “We actually also built a new breeding habitat for the salamander,” Mr. Motz said.

Calls seeking additional information from the DEC were not immediately returned.
