Charlene Sharon Nederlander died June 19, 2019, at her home in Southampton, surrounded by her family.
Ms. Nederlander was born to Yvette Hennig and Charles W. Saunders on May 2 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Her father was the owner of Charlie’s Cafe Exceptionale, an infamous steakhouse in St. Paul, Minnesota. She was a graduate of the Emma Willard School.
An avid athlete, she enjoyed golfing, tennis, horseback riding, skiing, as well as reading and, most of all, shopping. Survivors said she had a presence and a force of her own and that she was a woman of style and class.
She had two daughters, Sharon C. Nederlander, who predeceased her, and Kristina W. Gustafson, daughter of Deil O. Gustafson.
She and James M. Nederlander were married for 47 years; Mr. Nederlander predeceased her in 2016.
She and her husband had homes in Holmby Hills, Beverly Hills; Arizona at The Biltmore; Palm Beach, Florida; New York City and Southampton.
Her charities included Southampton Hospital, the Preservation Society of Palm Beach in Florida, Phoenix Symphony in Arizona, and the Barrows Neurological Foundation in Phoenix.
In addition to her daughter, she is survived by two grandchildren, Krissana and Gunnar; and stepson, James L. Nederlander. She also leaves her dog, Precious.
Memorial donations may be made to the ASPCA.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Brockett Funeral Home in Southampton.
