Let's Talk

So far, Congressman Nick LaLota has not announced any plans to meet with his constituents at a town hall meeting. I would urge him to have one soon so that he can explain to us all how his votes in Congress have benefited us citizens. I will even help him out by giving him some of our questions in advance. First, Congressman, you voted for the so-called “Big, Beautiful Bill” presented by President Donald Trump. This bill will raise our national debt to unsustainable levels. Defunded but Not Defeated

I have Brian Cosgrove, host of “The Afternoon Ramble” on WLIW 88.3 FM, to thank for turning me on to Nick Drake. I’ll expand on the latter in a moment. As some of you already know, WLIW, based in Southampton, is the latest iteration of the public radio station that began almost 50 years ago as WSCR. It was first housed in a Southampton College dormitory suite and run as a student club. Construction of a new stereo FM station began in the basement of Southampton Hall by 1978. The antenna tower was raised in January 1980, and, two months ... by Tom Clavin

Competing Stories

There are two concurrent news stories competing for the national attention this week. One of them is the Jeffery Epstein story, which many feel could establish a connection with well-known elites and Mr. Epstein’s procurement of underage girls for them. We don’t know if there is any “there” there yet, but expectations were raised. Now, whether or not something nefarious is discovered, the pitchforks are out, leading a Salem-esque rush to find an evildoer. For Democrats, this, hopefully, could tarnish the president whom they so deeply despise. A real danger is that merely having been associated with Mr. Epstein might, ... by Staff Writer

VIEWPOINT: A Constitutional Crisis Requires Action

By Judi Roth The League of Women Voters of the Hamptons, Shelter Island and the North Fork is known to readers of these papers and to the community at large. We’ve marched in Southampton Village’s July 4th parade. We’ve held meetings in the libraries in Bridgehampton, East Hampton, Sag Harbor, Southampton and Westhampton Beach. We’ve been at senior centers almost everywhere. We’ve organized and moderated debates for candidates for school boards, village and Town Trustees, the town councils, Suffolk County Legislature and Congress. We have done voter registration at street fairs and post offices, and in front of Stop & ... by Judi Roth
