Six Bartenders Arrested For Serving Alcohol To Minor

Six bartenders were arrested over the weekend at three bars—Dream nightclub in Hampton Bays, as well as Nello Summertimes and 75 Main in Southampton Village—in separate undercover investigations by Southampton Town and Southampton Village police in an ongoing crackdown on underage drinking at local establishments.

At all three nightspots, police reported that the bartenders served alcohol to an underage police agent.

On Saturday night and continuing into the following morning, Southampton Village Police sent an agent to Nello’s and 75 Main, both on Main Street, and the Southampton Social Club on Elm Street.

“The agent was to present legitimate identification if asked and not to mislead the bar employees if confronted,” explained Chief Thomas Cummings. In addition, a plainclothes police officer stood nearby to observe, he said.

... the trick is to catch the underage drinkers that are in the bars of their own doing, not the ones the police bring in to entrap employees.

It's about time Nello's was raided again. Memorial Day weekend it was filled with teens. At one point there was a waiting line because the place was so full. A group of young boys who looked to be about 17, according to my offspring, called out that they wanted to buy a table. The security guy let them jump the line and go right in. Money talks there, and age doesn't matter. We just tragically lost a kid in East Quogue to drunk driving, we don't want to lose any others.

It's a ridiculous law. Go visit any college and you could arrest 90% of the student population. Drunk driving should not be tolerated and punishment for such offense should be stricter but the drinking age limit should be lowered.

The kids that drink should be arrested along with their parents that gives them the okay! By the time theses kids reach 21 alot of them are alcoholics. the beverages places should be raided also because they have workers that are selling to the underage. Let me tell you its not only the white trash kids, or the spanish kids its the Middle class and rich kids that parents allow this in there homes.

I don't understand. Two of these bartenders are under the age of 21 themselves. The law doesn't have a problem with that?

Why don't the Southampton Town Police raid Southampton's Publick House? Because the cops who hang out there know that the 16-20 year olds who hang out there getting schmammered are easy pickin's on any wednesday night. That place is just stuffed to the brim with young ladies talking about their SAT's and college applications. Guess somebody else is gonna have to get the "Why you little.." treatment again before anything else happens at that place.

According to my son who turned 21 a few months ago most of the local clubs and bars are full of underage kids, I asked him how they get in to the places and he says they all have fake ID's...

An 18 year old is considered an adult and can be tried in court if he makes false judgement and commits a crime. So an 18 year old is capable of making every other decision as an adult but is incapable of making a decision whether or not they should drink? The 21 year old age limit for alcohol consumption sounds somewhat hypocritical.

It's not just the annual problem of Nello's serving underage drinkers. Iit's also the loud, relentlessly pounding music it generates until two in the morning making sleep impossible for those living nearby - its nearest neighbor has to leave her house each weekend to get any sleep, plus noises of the shouts and altercations that take place outside of it and along Post Crossing where overflow parking occurs. It's about where responsibility ultimaetly lies. Have you ever been behind a bar, trying to serve more than 50 people waiting for a drink?

You have the bouncers at the DOOR, because on a busy night like that, the priority of the bartender is to SERVE patrons. That's THEIR responsibility. It is the responsibility of the DOOR, to account for the legality of the patrons. How quickly do you think you would get a cocktail, if everyone who "bellied up" had to be I.D.'d?

As someone who was a bartender in the past, I couldn't agree more. It should be the bouncers responsibility...when you are working behind a packed bar it is impossible to if EVERYONE.

Maybe we could amend the laws that those who serve, should be eligible to drink alcohol at 18, and leave it 21 for everyone else.
