Elwood Charles Baumgart of Hampton Bays died on July 31 in Houston, Texas, while on his quest to visit all the baseball stadiums in the USA. “Elly,” as his friends and family called him, was 62.
Mr. Baumgart was born on June 4, 1953, to Frances Borell Baumgart and Elwood Charles Baumgart, both of whom predeceased him. He graduated from Mercy High School in 1972, received a bachelor’s degree in nuclear science from the State University of New York Maritime College in 1976 and a master’s in mechanical engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology in 1979. Mr. Baumgart served in the U.S. Coast Guard, Port of New York, as a marine inspector from 1976 to 1979. He was employed by Texaco Marine Services Inc. as a marine engineer from 1979 to 1993; upon retirement from Texaco, Mr. Baumgart became an associate professor in the engineering department of the State University of New York Maritime College in 1994.
While at the Maritime College, he was the senior engineering training officer for the summer sea terms, from 1995 to 2002, of the training ship “Empire State.” He was currently a professor in the engineering department of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York.
Mr. Baumgart was a member of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the American Society of Naval Engineers. He held a federal license USCG Chief Engineer Steam, Motor and Gas Turbine Vessels of Unlimited Horsepower, PIC Dangerous Liquids and a certification as chief engineer and tankerman for services on tank ships carrying dangerous liquid oil or chemical cargoes.
Mr. Baumgart is survived by a brother, John Baumgart and partner Suzanne Hewitt; aunts and uncles, Barbara and Stefan J. Borell, and Carol and Duane Danielson; cousins and family, including Elizabeth Borell Lindtvit, Frank and Kala, Stefan B. and Susan Borell, Alinda and Stefan A. Borell, Sharon Danielson Illies, Chuck and Melissa Illies and Eric Danielson and Michelle, Caitlyn, Conner and Callie Danielson, Ben, Wendy and Caitlyn Lupia and Benjamin W. Lupia Jr.
