Hampton Bays Fire Department volunteers will be able to train closer to home, starting as soon as this spring, following the completion of a new obstacle course now being built in the fire substation on Ponquogue Avenue.

Anthony Romagnoli, a 14-year-old freshman at Hampton Bays High School, is building the firefighter training maze in the building’s basement to complete his large-scale community service project—his final requirement in order to earn the rank of Eagle Scout.

Anthony said he designed the 24-foot-long “mask-confidence course” using the computer program Google SketchUp. When it is finished, firefighters will travel through the maze, which is made out of wood and corrugated pipe, while wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus—a breathing mask worn by firefighters when entering a flaming building.
