Early Demolition Work Begins At Canoe Place Inn In Hampton Bays

Crews began demolishing a small section of the Canoe Place Inn in Hampton Bays this week as a precursor to restoring the historic building.

Workers are now knocking down a “connector,” a section of the structure that runs between the inn and its ballroom. Cousins and developers Gregg and Mitchell Rechler, of Rechler Equity Partners, received approval from the Southampton Town Board in May to demolish the section so long as it lacks historical significance.

Jim Morgo, a spokesman for the Rechlers, explained this week that the connector was not part of the original inn, portions of which date back to the 1920s. The eastern and western wings of the inn are considered historic, according to Southampton Town Planning Board Chairman Dennis Finnerty.

The developer was also given permission to remove windows and doors from the structure so they could be fixed and reinstalled at a later date.

“The bottom line is it’s all going to be rebuilt,” Mr. Morgo said of the project.

Mr. Finnerty pointed out that the developer is also working on some emergency roof repairs to prevent water from seeping into the building during the winter months. The workers are also removing asbestos, a toxic building material commonly used several decades ago that can permanently scar lung tissue if inhaled, from the structure.

In January 2015, the Town Board approved the construction of 37 townhouses on the 4.5-acre property that sits on the eastern side of the Shinnecock Canal as part of larger project that also includes restoring the Canoe Place Inn so it can eventually reopen as a 25-room inn with guest cottages, and also construct a new 300-seat catering hall on the western property, which measures 5.6 acres. The project is part of a planned development district.

The developers, meanwhile, are still embroiled in a legal battle with a group of residents, who have called themselves the Shinnecock Neighbors and remain opposed to the townhouses as the work also calls for the installation of a sewage treatment facility in their neighborhood. As part of their lawsuit, the neighbors argue that the project will create too much density on the eastern bank of the canal.

State Supreme Court Justice William Rebolini on August 30 denied a request by the Rechlers that sought an outright dismissal of the lawsuit that challenges the Town Board’s decision to approve the planned development district—allowing the suit to continue moving forward.

I am glad that the historic front building is being preserved! Kudos to the Southampton Town Planning Board.

The building is not at all historic. It's less then 100 years old and has virtually none of it original features. The site is historic, but allowing overdevelopment on the east side of the canal in exchange for saving this building is hysterical, not historic.....

I recall hearing the area was a meeting spot for corrupt NYC politicians during the Gay Nineties (1890s). Nostalgia for the "good ole days" of Tammany Hall is probably not something that looks especially good on the community. Later on, I recall hearing it was quite the night spot.

I'm not an expert, but I'd say the property has promise as both a hotel and catering hall/destination. Close to the highway and LIRR, although the Canoe Place Station was located on the east side of the Shinnecock ...more

According to the Town code a structure needs to be "at least 50 years old" to be considered a heritage resource. The Canoe Place Inn is 94 years old, nearly twice as old as the qualification. To say that it is not at all historic is to say something not at all accurate.

There is hardly any free retail space in Hampton Bays. It show how vibrant the town is. We need to clean up this mess. Lets move forward. Thanks to the town for finally picking up the ball and running with it!

What does the retail space have to do with the CPI? The Yoga House just moved out and that makes 3 vacant stores on that side of the street. The CPI construction is privately funded - if anyone should be thanked it is the Rechlers for waiting all these years. I wonder how many taxpayers and residents would say they want this building saved. I wonder if asked today how many would be ok with the timeshares that were originally proposed.

The town does not seem to even care to tell us just what the hell is going on! Maybe they need more time to relocate all the rats from the CPI to the diner.
