The Hampton Bays girls basketball team had a prime opportunity to win its first game of the season in its season finale at home against Center Moriches on Thursday, February 7, and by halftime, it looked like that might just happen, with the Lady Baymen leading, 21-18.

But a poor second half, in which the Lady Baymen were outscored, 29-16, wound up spelling doom for them, as they suffered a 47-37 loss, finishing the season winless through 20 games. It was just the third win of the season for Center Moriches, which squeaked past Hampton Bays, 23-22, in the first matchup of the two teams. Pam Grajales, a junior, scored a game-high 19 points in the most recent loss, followed by sophomore Sierra Gaffney’s eight points.

Each player is expected to return next season for the Lady Baymen, including Gaffney, Grajales and fellow junior Rebecca Heaney. With five sophomores and five freshmen playing varsity for the first time this season, the experience the team got this season should help going forward.

It was an honor to help coach these young ladies this year. They have improved drastically since their 1st practice this year. There is only one direction we can go next year and that is up.
