More KKK Flyers Passed Out In Hampton Bays

Feb 4, 2015 12:55 PM

Residents of a senior housing complex in Hampton Bays said they were shocked and appalled to find Ku Klux Klan propaganda left outside their front doors shortly before Martin Luther King Jr. Day last month.

On the night of Friday, January 16, several residents of the Hampton Bays Apartments, a subsidized senior housing complex on Springville Road, said they found fliers in front of their apartments advertising the KKK. Pieces of coal accompanied the paperwork.

The fliers stated, “On Martin Luther King day … You are celebrating a Communist Pervert,” and made various allegations against Dr. King and his associates, including that they hired prostitutes.

“The obvious bigotry is concerning,” Curtis Highsmith, executive director of the Southampton Housing Authority and manager of the 37-unit complex, said this week. “Many of the elderly men and women of color here came from the South ... in an era where people did this in an open forum. So to be reminded of this is particularly traumatic for them,” added Mr. Highsmith, who is African-American.

Similar fliers were also put on windshields of cars on Lamplighters Circle, near the Villa Paul restaurant, and next to homes elsewhere along Springville Road, Southampton Town Police Sergeant Susan Ralph said.

Last month’s incident marks the second time that KKK literature has been distributed in the hamlet in the past year, with the first taking place over the summer. In that instance, homes on Washington Heights and Columbine avenues, both of which are north of Montauk Highway, were targeted.

Several residents of the Hampton Bays Apartments complex, all of whom declined to give their names because they were afraid for their safety, said they were surprised that law enforcement officials did not alert the media about the incident. They also said they would like to see more police cars patrolling the housing complex.

Sgt. Ralph said no crime was committed because the literature is protected as free speech and because it did not appear to focus on any specific person, as it was widely distributed.

“There’s no crime, because they aren’t targeting a specific group,” she said. “We are keeping track of things and we are investigating as far as tracking these reports and trying to see if we can find out who’s doing this.”

One of the residents said she saw an individual exiting the complex the same night the fliers were found wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt and camouflage pants, although she couldn’t tell if it was a man or a woman.

Several of the residents felt they were targeted because they live in publicly subsidized housing.

Mr. Highsmith added that, because the fliers were left next to people’s doors, whoever left them would have had to trespass in order to do so.

“Any type of hatred is dangerous, any type of bigotry is dangerous,” he said. “The danger may not be physical, it may be political or social, but it’s a viewpoint of a community that you want to squash before other people start to pick it up.”

This is either a sick individual that needs help or

a set up from the far left looking for votes in 2016

My guess is the latter

Maybe you should guess again.

"or a set up from the far left looking for votes in 2016 My guess is the latter"

Racial pamphlets were handed out throughout Hampton Bays, and your response is a ridiculous Fox & Friends conspiracy theory, that the Democrats did it to procure votes. Serious??? This country needs healing.

We should not blame anyone till we find not who it is, It could be a real nut or just as easily a deception.
By Undocumented Democrat (2034), southampton on Feb 5, 15 6:15 PM
How about this Phil,

Whoever is doing this will get 5 years in prison with no parole, would you agree to that now.

Before we find out who is responsible.

I would, now once again would you ?
By 27dan (2811), Shinnecock Hills on Feb 5, 15 6:19 PM
translation : if the individual responsible is a minority or occupy type, well, that person is just a misguided individual tired of a system that has failed him and should maybe receive some counseling.

If we find out the person is a white male then we should burn this motha down !

I would say all Americans only have themselves to blame for their failures or success and I did not see you answer Dan's question Phil are you willing to give the same punishment to know matter who is distributing these letters because in my opinion it is even more disturbing to tarnish any group's reputation by falsely setting forth a false situation

because what you are suggesting amounts to affirmative action for criminals you know perfectly well that if it is a white person found to be the perpetrator he will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law including racial bias crimes. But if it is a black man or email already they will probably just get off on disturbing the peace. You think you're so cute but everyone here seems right through your subterfuge

Unfortunately marlin, your argument does not hold water.

The Democrats/Dixiecrats of yesteryear became the current Republican Party. There was a polar shift in party politics post WWII.

What law will you punish these people with? The KKK is such a hating group I cant figure out who is acceptable to them. The problem with freedom of speech is idiots like this are allowed to promote their sick agenda. Fortunately I believe most people look at the KKK as a bunch of nuts that are from the stone age.

No one here thinks freedom of speech is a problem, except the Press who ties our hands daily while forcing us daily to water down our description of how we feel about you.

The Klan is a bunch of whack jobs. That being said, they have the right to free speech ,the same right that is afforded to Move On, the Communist Party, the tools who protest at soldier's funerals, Code Pink or any organization with divisive messages.. One does not have to agree with them or listen to their hate filled rhetoric, but we must defend their rights.

Here's what Consumers Union has to say about net neutrality:

"What is Network Neutrality?

The basic idea of network neutrality, or net neutrality, is the Internet should be open so consumers have unrestricted access to lawful Web sites and online businesses can compete freely.

Some Internet service providers want to give preferential treatment to certain sites, such as their own content or that of those willing to pay extra fees. Without network neutrality Internet service ...more
