Jean Gurley Newman of Quogue and Delray Beach, Florida, died November 5, 2016, at the Delray Medical Center Hospice Unit. She was 84.
Ms. Newman was born March 21, 1932, in Port Washington, the daughter of Katherine Lyall Gurley and Charles Emerson Gurley.
She was a member of the Quogue Field Club, Quogue Beach Club, and, in Florida, of the Gulfstream Bath and Tennis and Saint Andrews clubs. Ms. Newman was a most competent organizer for any project, a good friend to many, and a generous hostess. Survivors said her energy had no bounds; in summer after two or three sets of tennis in the morning, she would go to the beach to swim “out to the barrels and back,” have lunch with family and friends and return to the Field Club for a round or two of golf. In later years, she enjoyed playing bridge in the afternoons.
She was predeceased by a sister, Edith G. Jacobsen, and her husband of 37 years, Bruce E. Newman, Sr.
She is survived by two sons, Bruce E. Newman Jr. and wife Suki, and Peter L. Newman and wife Karen; two step-daughters, Tonia and Talia; step-grandchildren, Alex, Gabe, Leland and Elise; and three grandsons, Stetson, Chase and Trent Newman.
A memorial service in Quogue will take place in July. Condolences may be emailed to the family at Newmans2@bellsouth.net
Memorial donations may be sent to East End Hospice, Box 1048, Westhampton Beach, New York 11978.
