Quogue Man Found Dead On Beach In Village; Foul Play Not Suspected

Sep 18, 2018 3:00 PM

A Quogue man was found dead on the ocean beach off Dune Road in Quogue on Monday.

Quogue Village Police officers discovered the body of Leonard Lato, 62, near the surf line at approximately 1 p.m., after responding to a 911 call, according to a Tuesday morning press release.

Although police are still investigating the cause of death, Chief Christopher Isola said that the death does not appear to be criminal in nature.

The Suffolk County Medical Examiner will perform an autopsy in the coming days to determine the cause of death.

Chief Isola added on Tuesday morning that Mr. Lato was observed getting into the water for a swim by one of the department’s police officers during a beach patrol approximately two hours prior to his body being discovered. He explained that Mr. Lato was an avid swimmer and would often be found swimming at the ocean beach, just west of Quogue Village Beach.

Since 2010, Mr. Lato served as an attorney at his Hauppauge-based firm, Law Office of Leonard Lato, after having served 13 years with the U.S. Department of Justice as an assistant United States attorney, and seven years as a bureau chief with the Suffolk County district attorney’s office.

In 2011, Mr. Lato unsuccessfully ran for Quogue Village justice against Alan Lazarescu, who recently stepped down from the position in June after seven years.

Mr. Lato also served as an attorney for former Suffolk County Legislator George O. Guldi, who in 2011 was sentenced to four to 12 years in prison after being convicted of grand larceny and insurance fraud.

Police could not offer any additional details on Tuesday.
