Remsenburg-Speonk Elementary School was transformed into “Safety Town” this week—a driving course for scooters that’s designed to teach students the importance of bicycle and traffic safety.
Designed by physical education teach‑ ers Guy Napolitano and Tracy Davis, the course combined various aspects from the curriculum including art, music, math and history. Students started off in an area of the gym designated Remsenburg and Speonk, where paintings depicted local landmarks, like the post office.
As students scooted their way through the course, they traveled through Queens and stopped at Citi Field, where clips of the 1986 World Series were being projected onto the wall. From there, students could either pay a toll to go through the Midtown Tunnel or could go over a bridge. In Manhattan, they drove past the Statue of Liberty while listening to Broadway show tunes. Students ended their tour back in Remsenburg.
