Vincent ‘Jim’ Ramunno Of Sag Harbor Dies May 10

author on May 25, 2015

Vincent “Jim” Ramunno of Sag Harbor died at home on May 10. He was 82.

Born in Sag Harbor on October 24, 1932, to Concetta DelMonaco and Paul Ramunno, he attended St. Andrew’s School and Pierson High School. He served two years in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Korea from 1953 to 1954. While in Korea, he served with the Korean Military Advisory Group, which trained the Koreans to fight in the war.

After his discharge at the rank of corporal, he returned home to resume working at the Bulova Watchcase Factory, where he was a diamond setter. It was there that he met Evelyn Ruppel of Bridgehampton, whom he married in 1955. He was also employed for a short time at Agawam Aircraft as a toolmaker. His main interest was construction, and for 42 years, he was a construction manager with Meadowmere Construction Company of Southampton.

A dedicated volunteer fireman for 59 years, he served the department in many offices and rose to the rank of chief in 1976. He served on the Sag Harbor Zoning Board of Appeals and served two terms as Sag Harbor Village Trustee and as deputy mayor during the Pierce Hance administration.

One of his greatest interests took hold in the 1960s, when with a group of friends he joined the Jim Malone 34 modified race team and Saturday night racing at Riverhead Raceway. His interest in racing continued all through his life. Other interests included hunting, fishing, and working the local bays and fields. As a teenager, he crewed with Cappy Amundsen, sailing the Peconic. In his later years, he enjoyed a weekly game of pinochle with his friends at the firehouse.

Survivors describe Mr. Ramunno as a family man. He was proud to help his five children and two grandchildren construct their own homes. The family often gathered for summer Sundays by the family pool with “Big Poppy.”

Mr. Ramunno is survived by his wife of 59 years, Evelyn; five children, Robin Mazzeo and husband Vincent, Jan Federico and husband Joe, Paul Ramunno and wife Anne Reidy, David Ramunno and Evelynne Ramunno; seven grandchildren, Nicholas Mazzeo and wife Christine Rozzi, Lauryn Mazzeo-Weeks and husband Joey, Jordan and Jake Federico, Sydney Ramunno, Paul and Saverio Anderson; three great-grandchildren, Dominic, Gabriella and Enzo Mazzeo; and a nephew, Robert Kisleyak and wife Teri.

He was predeceased by his parents and by his sisters and brothers-in-law, Adeline and Robert Otten and Lucille and Robert Kisleyak.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Yardley and Pino Funeral Home.

The Bus Test

Social media was abuzz last week with a report: An unmarked bus was dropping off adult men in the parking lot of the Macy’s shopping plaza in Hampton Bays. Speculation was rampant, and it largely followed a national narrative about an “invasion” of immigrants ending up in American communities. In fact, there’s little information on what the bus (or buses — there likely were others) was doing. It might have been seasonal workers arriving for the season, but it could have been something innocuous, like a private bus trip returning home. Terrible Optics

Westhampton Beach Village officials and Police Chief Steven McManus need a lesson in optics. The revelation last week that a body camera video recorded during the investigation of an off-duty Village Police officer who rolled his truck during a single-car accident in November 2021 was not released to the public for close to a year, despite numerous requests from The Press that went unanswered for seven months, sends the wrong signal about the village’s commitment to keeping the public informed. It was only after a request from an attorney on behalf of The Press that a copy of the video ... by Editorial Board

A Costly Hire

Permitting public employees to collect a six-figure pension while simultaneously collecting a six-figure salary is one of the reasons why New York is such a high-tax state. Though the Village of Southampton took it a step further: It wasn’t enough for the new village administrator to receive a $165,000 salary on top of a $120,000 New York Police Department pension — the Village Board just gave Administrator Anthony Carter a $50,000 pay bump, retroactive to when he started in November, in lieu of receiving village health insurance and other benefits. State Sets Aside Funding for Affordable Housing at College Campus

The State Legislature on April 22 approved Governor Kathy Hochul’s request for $600 million in funding for several affordable housing programs, including one that would permit the construction of such units on the Stony Brook Southampton campus. But the celebration has to be put on hold for now, according to Assemblyman Fred W. Thiele Jr., because a related bill that would authorize the actual expenditure of the allocated funds has yet to pass. Thiele said he was optimistic that authorization bill could be passed before the end of the session on June 6. “The legislature had a lot of questions,” ... by Stephen J. Kotz
