Bay Street To Refund Tickets For Those Who No Longer Wish To Attend Roger Waters's Performance Friday

Oct 28, 2015 4:14 PM

For those who are offended by Roger Waters’s anti-Israel sentiment, Bay Street Theater has announced that it will refund tickets to his sold-out performance that is scheduled for this Friday.

The Pink-Floyd co-founder is performing as part of G.E. Smith’s “Portraits” concert series.

Tracy Mitchell, the executive director of Bay Street, said on Tuesday that not one person has called for a refund so far. “In fact, we have people begging for tickets,” she said.

Ms. Mitchell explained that Bay Street is committed to the right to free speech but also respects the rights of others who are offended by Mr. Waters’s scheduled show.

With the word of his impending performance, several Jewish residents in the community have threatened to picket, especially because of his ongoing participation in the Boycott Divestment Sanctions movement, or BDS, which encourages the embargo of Israeli exports to put political and economic pressure on the country. The movement has stated that its ultimate goal is to end what it calls Israel’s occupation of the West Bank.

Because of Mr. Waters's vocal anti-Israel sentiment, the Simon Wiesenthal Center, an international Jewish human rights organization, has called on New Yorkers to "give Roger Waters the reception he deserves: an empty hall," a release said on Tuesday. "We urge people who may have been unaware of his hate-filled boycott campaign and bought tickets for his performance, to vote with their feet and instead stand in solidarity—outside of the theater—with the innocent victims of terrorism in The Holy Land."

And I thought free speech was still a component of our society!
Roger Waters should be free to OUT Israel for their APARTHEID STATE 0 if this is still the USA

Take a good look at Israel - no self respecting "Liberal" of the US would EVER want to live there - those that are protesting Roger Waters would be carefully "watched" in Israel for their activism on any side -

Let's put up a wall on Division Street - and only have human rights - and basic necessities like water on ...more

No Sorry Vikki K, you are incorrect and clearly have no understanding of the region prior to Israel becoming a state. Actually it's important to understand the history of the region when the Ottoman empire was in charge.
You do not understand the definition of apartheid either.

And here is a question for you Southampton Press.. Why was Richard Braun's comment removed ? It's ok to call Israel an apartheid state ? But not to compare something to Nazi's ? Where is the free speech here ...more

Hey Biba - Apartheid = separation, segregation
The separation between Israelis & Palestinians is mandated by the State of Israel - history has nothing to do with it - Look at the current situation. Palestinians exist without basic needs and are having their land occupied & are treated as second class citizens under a repressive regime. I lived there & witnessed it with my own eyes - have you ever been there? What do you think a "settlement" is? A euphemistic term for stealing & building ...more

Well, it's clear you still do not understand the definition of apartheid. Not only is this a problem ,it's an insult of epic proportions to the people that actually suffered because of it.
You also do not understand why and how the settlements were obtained. You do not understand the concept of self defense. The issue is not about keeping good people out, it's about keeping the bad people out. It's about keeping ALL of the citizens of Israel ( Jews ,Christians & Muslims ) safe.
And in ...more
