An online petition opposing a plan to demolish the tiny Harbor Heights gas and service station on the outskirts of Sag Harbor Village, and expand and modernize it by adding a convenience store and upgrading its gas pumps, had collected more than 230 signatures as of Wednesday morning. The petition was to be presented to the Sag Harbor Village Planning Board that morning.
“We oppose the application of Petroleum Ventures/Harbor Heights for a gas station with many more pumps, a massive overhead canopy and a new, oversized convenience store,” the petition states. “The Sag Harbor Village boards must strictly apply all present zoning codes to protect the village character and the residential neighborhood.”
John Shakra, a neighbor of the Harbor Heights station on Hampton Street, said his goal in starting the petition was to make the village regulatory boards aware of the “strong desire of [the] community.”
