When Greg Harris and Daniel Hirsch, who own Southampton Books on Hampton Road in Southampton Village, opened their second location on Main Street in Sag Harbor last month, they wanted to bring authors into their 1,600-square-foot space for signings, Q&A’s and readings.

They hit a home run with their first one on Saturday evening.

Keith Hernandez, the former New York Mets first baseman who won the World Series with the team in 1986 and is now a color commentator for Mets broadcasts on SNY, was brought in to sign his book, “I’m Keith Hernandez: A Memoir.” Published by Little, Brown and Company in May 2018, Hernandez recaps his entire baseball career, starting with Little League games back home in Northern California, to his stints with the St. Louis Cardinals and Mets. It also dives into his moments outside of baseball, including his appearances on “Seinfeld.”

Harris said the event was a success with 50 to 60 people waiting in line to have their books, and other memorabilia, signed by Hernandez.

“I’m a big Mets fan, always have been. When I heard he had a book coming out, I knew he lived in Sag Harbor, so we set it up through his publisher,” he explained. “Keith was great. He was super happy to be there and sign books for everyone and take photos. My parents came and they were pickled.”

Even more so, Harris said, when former Mets relief pitcher John Franco showed up at the end of the signing, putting a nice end to the night.

Harris just finalized a bunch of other author signings and Q&A’s. Next up is John Glynn, who will talk about and sign his debut memoir, “Out East: Memoir of a Montauk Summer,” on July 12 from 6 to 7 p.m. For a full list of events, go to southamptonsagharborbooks.com.

Glad that Southampton Books have done so well in SH Village that they can open up elsewhere. Best of luck in your new venture.
