Popular Southampton restaurant Barrister’s will be closing its doors for good this Sunday after the longtime owner announced plans for retirement last December.

According to a Facebook post on the Barrister’s page, the restaurant will bid a final farewell after more than 30 years from 3 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, and all are welcome to attend.

“What a long, strange trip it’s been,” the post says.

The Main Street restaurant was 18 months old when Michael Ferran and Richard “Digger” McMahon bought it in 1979. Both graduates of Southampton College, Mr. Ferran and Mr. McMahon had worked as bartenders at the Driver’s Seat, another longtime village establishment, before they came up with a plan to open their own restaurant.

In a past interview, Mr. Ferran explained that the building had been on the market for roughly four years, since Mr. McMahon was diagnosed with cancer in 2009. Mr. McMahon died later that year.

It is unclear at this time if the building itself has been sold, or what will replace the restaurant.

I remember the summer when we all lived in the Southampton College dorm. Good luck.

My favorite in Southampton. The only place in the Village that offers good, affordable food and drinks and it has to close. An iconic Southampton institution that will be very difficult to replace.

On your last week, why not offer your famous burgers at 1980 prices as a bon voyage gift and toast to your innumerable fans and customers over the decades? A fitting farewell, going out with a bang!

As I hope will happen, a new restaurant business will take over the star favored corner or Main and Wall. My first memory is of Ann's Luncheonette and the gang of village opinon makers that gathered there on the counter stools for their morning caffine kick every am.
