Police: Mechanical Malfunction Caused County Road 39 Rollover

Aug 2, 2011 12:14 PM

A mechanical malfunction was the apparent cause of a truck rollover on County Road 39 in Shinnecock Hills last Thursday, July 28, that sent its driver to the hospital.

Southampton Town Police Sergeant Todd Spencer said the malfunction caused the driver, William Beisler, 29, of Riverhead, to lose control of his 2003 Ford pickup shortly after 11:30 a.m., causing it to strike a utility pole and roll onto its side. He was driving westbound, just west of Tuckahoe Road, the intersection at Stony Brook Southampton.

Mr. Beisler was taken to Southampton Hospital after complaining of head and neck pain. No charges were filed as a result of the accident, the sergeant said.

A portion of the highway was closed to westbound traffic but was reopened after about an hour.

Is it me or does it feel like there is a rollover on 39 every week since memorial day? Sometimes twice a week one time 2 accidents at the same time on 39 in two different locations. Something has to be done

Yes, what as to be done is the ridiculous speed limit experiment of 35 MPH needs to be put back to a more reasonable 45 MPH, 35 is just STUPID! the problem is you have the meek who drive mostly Volvo's and Subaru's actually doing 35 with there customary 7 car lengths for safety between them and the next car to prove a point. The problem comes in when the average driver gets flipping frustrated and reacts in a regrettable manor. There have been more accidents since this 35 MPH as been instituted ...more

Actually, I would opine it's when people accelerate to more than 40 MPH, close the gaps that are designed into the traffic pattern by the lights (yes, the lights to "chit chat" with eachother), and leave someone unable to enter the thoroughfare.

Said driver becomes frustrated, does something risky, and BANG. Wails, and sirens.

Having to block Strong's La. , because people are TOO STUPID to use Cook's La. , for it's better vantage, should tell you most of what you really need to ...more

Pardon, "historically, TOO STUPID".

I'm no columbo but single car roll-overs like we have had all summer are the result of fiddling with the cell-phone. period.

I drive large vehicles, and have an exceptional view of other drivers from a higher vantage point.

I would estimate 3 out of every 5 drivers I see, are doing everything else except actually driving while behind the wheel.
