Press Columnist And Author Reynolds Dodson Dies Following Battle With Cancer

According to Mr. Dodson’s family, there will be no funeral or memorial services, however, a gathering of Mr. Dodson’s friends is being planned for a later date.

ORIGINAL STORY:

Southampton Press columnist and author Reynolds Dodson of Water Mill died on Friday night following a battle with cancer. He was 74.

Mr. Dodson’s column, The View East, was a mainstay of The Press since 1996. He was the author of many books, most recently “A Cockeyed Guide to the Hamptons,” a collection of more than 60 humorous essays about life in the Hamptons.

He lived in Water Mill with his wife Susan. His columns won six awards from the New York Press Association, including Best Humor Column.

Mr. Dodson was a former magazine editor for Reader’s Digest, Meredith Corporation, Family Weekly (now USA Weekend) and The New York Times Company, and his work has appeared in numerous publications, including Parade, Ladies’ Home Journal, Playboy, and Newsday.

He was the author of four previous books: “Beyond Valium: The Brave New World of Psychochemistry”; “Urban Renewal”; “Unfriendly Skies: Revelations of a Deregulated Airline Pilot”; and “Splitsville,” a compilation of comic strips he co-created.

He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Northwestern University in 1960 and went on to earn a master’s degree in English from the University of California, Berkeley.

Amanda Kempton, the 32-year-old Virginia resident who police said struck and killed Sara Burack in a hit-and-run accident in the early morning hours of Thursday morning, was arraigned on Saturday in Southampton Town Justice Court.
