Slow Food East End has awarded its Snail of Approval to Green Thumb in Water Mill, a family-owned farm stand that has roots in East End farming going back to the 1600s.

The Snail of Approval goes to farms that adhere to the Slow Food organization’s ideals of selling and serving local, sustainable and clean food. This is the first time the award has been given out to farm stands, the Green Thumb being one of two to receive the honor.

The Green Thumb farm stand was first opened in 1961 and is open May through November, selling only locally grown and organic foods and plants. The stands features many popular products from the East End, such as baked goods from Tate’s and cheeses from Mecox Bay Dairy.

One of the biggest goals of the Raymond-Halsey family’s farm stand is to use majority non-hybrid seeds to grow herbs, fruit and vegetables. This preserves genetic biodiversity in the local food system.

Green Thumb is located at 829 Montauk Highway in Water Mill, and operating hours are every day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
