As most of you know, my favorite season is right around the corner. That’s right—baseball season!!
This past Saturday I took a ride out to Sag Harbor where we held the “Pintauro Baseball League” 2012 draft. It is a fantasy league that features mostly family members, with a few close friends thrown into the mix. There is no money involved if you win this fantasy league, but you do get your name engraved on a trophy to be displayed wherever you wish, and you get to brag and rub it in—which my family does very well.
I always go into the draft telling myself to pick players with my head instead of my “pinstriped” heart. My first pick this year was, once again, a New York Yankee. I cannot help it if they have the best second baseman in the game, and we all know how hard it is to find a great middle infielder that has speed and power these days.
So, needless to say, Robinson Cano was my first pick and then guess who was waiting there for my second pick? None other than Retta’s favorite baseball player, Mark Teixeira. Things are looking solid on the right side of my infield. I was able to grab only one more Yankee—their newest pitcher, Michael Pineda—a few rounds later, but when drafting with mostly Yankee fans, those guys seem to disappear from the available players’ list quickly.
Now I have to come up with a new team name and wait patiently for the season to officially start on April 5. Good luck to all of you who participate in fantasy baseball and especially to the members of the Pintauro League. I am usually “Mr. Modest” and keep my mouth shut, but, this year, I am calling out the current champ, my cousin Tony, and have every intention of taking him down. (Yes, I am standing at my desk, in a Babe Ruth-esque pose, calling my shot.)
