UPDATE: Peaceful Black Lives Matter Rally Held In Westhampton Beach

Aug 22, 2016 9:45 AM

UPDATE: Sunday, 4:30 p.m.

Hundreds of people gathered in front of Westhampton Beach Village Hall for a Black Lives Matter rally on Sunday afternoon.

Protesters holding handmade signs, some of which read "White Silence Kills," "KKK No Way," and "No Justice No Peace," gathered to bring awareness to what they say is racism against the black community, explained Vanessa Vascez-Corleone, 28, of Riverhead, one of the organizers of the event.

"It affects every race," Ms. Vascez-Corleone said of the Black Lives Matter movement. "It's about racism in our justice system. It's still happening here."

Ms. Vascez-Corleone has organized other Black Lives Matter rallies throughout the East End. She said she chose to rally in Westhampton Beach this weekend because of an incident last month where residents in Westhampton Beach and Quogue found fliers on their driveways encouraging them to join the Ku Klux Klan.

"If you're going to pass out fliers, we're going to rally," Ms. Vascez-Corleone said of the KKK.

Ms. Vascez-Corleone and her co-organizers, Fuego McDaniel of Amityville and Willie Jenkins of Bridgehampton, said they saw some local members of the KKK nearby, though they did not appear to be counter protesting the rally.

During the rally, participants marched south down Potunk Lane and circled Main Street before heading back to Village Hall. On Main Street, business owners and other locals stepped outside when they heard the rally participants walking by on the sidewalk. Some clapped in support of the movement, while others joined in chanting "Black Lives Matter."

Shaki Walker of Westhampton described the rally in one word: Love.

"That's what it should be about," Mr. Walker said. "To me, Black Lives Matter means standing for peace in our communities."

ORIGINAL:

A peaceful Black Lives Matter rally has been scheduled for this Sunday afternoon in Westhampton Beach, though both rally organizers and village officials say any chance of a counter-protest by the Ku Klux Klan has been exaggerated by some media outlets.

The co-organizer for the rally, Donna Stovall, said on Wednesday evening that an event for Westhampton Beach had not even been scheduled before media outlets began posting word of an event online. She added that a gathering has since been organized, to be held at noon on Sunday outside of Village Hall, near the traffic circle, after people pledged to attend from all over New York in support of the Black Lives Matter movement.

Westhampton Beach Village Police Chief Trevor Gonce said he has been in contact with a local representative of the KKK who was reported to be planning a counter-protest. Hampton Bays resident Douglas Munker, a self-identified KKK member, told the chief he is not sure if he will stage a protest at the same time, but would provide more information to police if an event is planned.

"I feel bad for the community, because they are being pulled every which way," Ms. Stovall said. "The focus for us has always been to create a relationship with the community and the police department. We have never mentioned anything about the KKK: This is about black lives and young people, the next generation, and making sure there is no anger coming from our rallies."

To date, Ms. Stovall and her group have held two successful and peaceful rallies on the East End in Riverside and East Hampton. Another rally has been planned by the group for August 28 in Sag Harbor.

According to Ms. Stovall, her co-organizer, Vanessa Vascez-Corleone, was baited by other media organizations that insinuated there was already a KKK rally being planned. The Black Lives Matter rally was organized in response. She also said she believes the same tactics were used when discussing the Black Lives Matter rallies with the KKK.

"The police department is continuing to work with both groups to assure that rallies are peaceful and organized," Chief Gonce said.

So there seem to be a lot of people who agree with this comment. Could someone please explain to me in a logical way how BLM is racist? I'm honestly curious about the argument, because as I understand BLM - their core message is a request for equal treatment within our criminal justice system. In other words, they are asking for an end to racism within this sector. That seems like an anti-racist message to me.

And as a side note, I wonder if you would be saying they are irrelevant if you ...more

"Hands up, don't shoot", BLM's founding slogan, is based on a lie. The witnesses lied. The problem with the black community isn't white people, it's the failed policies of the democrats, beginning with the "Great Society" that breeds a culture of dependency and saps the black community's motivation to succeed. I would not make an analogy between Breast Cancer Awareness walk and Black Lives Matter. Breast Cancer Awareness walks raise money for research, free breast screening, helping fund medical treatment and care for those that can't afford it. Maybe I have missed reports where BLM has raised money for victim's families. Hopefully they have and then that would be a good thing.
By HB Proud (889), Hampton Bays on Aug 18, 16 2:44 PM
> so many unarmed blacks are gunned down by cops."

Has anything like that happened in Westhampton Beach? Recollect that it happened awhile back in Quogue, but BLM won't go there because they'll get there butts beat by Quogue cops.

And while someone passed out KKK literature in Westhampton Beach earlier this year, the one identified KKK member was in Hampton Bays a year or so ago so why isn't BLM doing their thing there? (That would be a rhetorical question for TRW.)

A terrorist organization is described as a political movement that employs the use of violence (or the threat of violence) against civilians, in order to attain goals that are political, religious or ideological in nature. This is done through the use of intimidation, coercion or instilling fear.
KKK and BLM both seem to qualify.

loading - the widely recognized voices of the BLM have denounced violence and called for peaceful protest. Only a small percentage of BLM protests around the world have actually been violent. It's just that the right-wing media focuses on the few that are. Of course those ones are going to make headlines. There is an overwhelmingly anti-Obama sentiment on the 27east comment boards. However, I hope you all know you're in the minority. The majority of Americans approve of him right now, and compared to pre-election ratings of all other presidents since WWII, his current rating puts him third after Clinton in 2000 and Eisenhower in 1960 (although Reagan finished above his current rating by the time the election rolled around in 1988).

In 2013, before BLM was even a thing, the WSJ reported "Prison sentences of black men were nearly 20% longer than those of white men for similar crimes in recent years." Countless academic and NGO studies have shown similar discrepancies that are explained only by race. If you don't want to call that racism, that's your choice, but others do define it as a type of racism. Whatever you want to call it - it's unequal treatment under the law. By SH_Res (342), Southampton on Aug 21, 16 7:25 PM
There are unjust problems facing many people and other minorities. And black on black crime is not just a problem, it's an epidemic. I understand BLM began after Trayvon Martin but the movement became nationally recognized after the death of Michael Brown. Thousands of innocent black people are killed by other black people yet no marches or movements for them. Also ,who exactly does all the looting during riots after these incidents ? Bringing up black-on-black crime is a diversion tactic. THAT IS NOT THE ISSUE HERE. The issue is systemic differences in treatment, along racial lines, by the people and systems put in place in this country to protect us.

Also, much of the black-on-black crime issue can be explained by socioeconomics rather than race. Poor urban blacks (51.3 per 1,000) have rates of violence that are actually slightly lower than poor urban whites (56.4 per 1,000); however, about 1 in 4 black Americans are ...more

This is the same comment you posted above, so see my response there. BLM does not AT ALL assume black lives are more important than others. BLM asks for society to treat black lives AS importantly as others, not more importantly. It came about after actions that made people feel like black lives were not being valued equally. Unfortunately you are misinformed, Jimmy, so your response still does not explain how BLM is racist.
By SH_Res (342), Southampton on Aug 22, 16 8:07 AM
Black people want others to take them seriously? Then they need to take themselves seriously first. What actions made them feel like their lives weren't being valued?? Was it their own actions? Black on black crime DOES matter. BLM needs to fix the problems within before they start pointing fingers. If they don't value their own lives, what is going to make others want to do what they won't??????

From my response to Gene, below. Your numbers are WAY oversimplified too dhehyo:

(1) While cops kill more white people than black people, white people also make up a much larger part of the population. Accounting for this, black people are 2.5 times more likely to be shot by police than white people.

I agree those numbers are over simplified, so let's dig deeper and look at some facts. The following data is from the FBI in 2013 and 2014.

Black people were six times more likely than non-blacks to commit murder and 12 times more likely to murder someone of another race. Of all interracial violent crimes involving blacks and whites, blacks were the perpetrators 85% of the time. So, blacks are 27 times more likely to attack a white person than vice versa. The first case you make is that black people are more likely to commit violent crime, including murder. This general statistic IN NO WAY justifies killing ...more

It's time to stop the division. If the movement wants total acceptance it needs to change it's focus to ALL LIVERS MATTER. Everyone should take a look and judge for themselves. If there is a massive cover up going on about Hillary Clinton’s failing health, and why doctors are calling attention to it. We need to know before the election not after so they can install the puppet VP.

The media's attempt to hide and attack any efforts to find out about Hillary's health must mean there is something there. We know Bill questioned whether she was healthy enough to run for President, so it seems fair game to ask.

There is an FBI investigation where she is instructed to turn over all emails and she not only holds back 10's of thousands of emails but detroys her hard drives. This is after she is found to have given access to top secret info to bad guys across the globe. Honestly, this is like some sort of cartoon world. Trump's birtherism is racist; now the sneeze watch on Hillary is sexism on steroids. Nothing new under the sun. From time immemorial, a strong woman has had to be neutered with charges of poor health, hormonal "imbalances", diminished stamina, name it. Notice that the very word "hysterical" has its roots in the word "uterus", the removal of which is a hysterectomy. Keep at the waste of your precious time, boys. We'll see who has eaten her spinach.

Sorry Hillary but the world just can't trust you. Anybody else would be indicted and heading to a long prison term. All of this to hide her unending greed and selling government access thru bribes to the family foundation.

Just how many excuses can your government come up with to protect this lying witch.

Trump Says He Supports Slashing Social Security From A ‘Moral Standpoint’

Social Security has been called the third rail of American politics: Touch it and you die. And if that is indeed the case, then Donald Trump might want to start picking out a nice casket.

More right wing obfuscation. Here's the full context, and do try to read it per etymology. In other words, words don't always mean the same thing centuries ago, compared to today. Daily life is the key to learning history, instead of naked facts and dates.

All of that could be easily achieved by private industry, local property taxes and with a small consumption V A T tax in place of the current system.

The V A T should be on all non essential goods and services that way the rich will pay more on there expensive luxury items. food medicine and primary shelter should be exempt, a much fairer system and rule out the corrupt targeting of groups the ruling party did not like as we saw with Lois Lerner and her boss.

UD said a mix of Private sector, a vat tax and property taxes. you could easily afford to provide for essential locale services from property taxes alone ( and many better ran places in the country do) thats what they were originally set up for.

Actually what UD said was "a small...VAT tax" and while I don't necessarily disagree with him, I am curious as to how small he thinks that tax might be. On a flat tax with no deductions the generally accepted number is around 17%. Would that be acceptable UD?

She doesn’t have the stamina,” Trump insisted. “I don’t believe she has the stamina.” Clinton shot back: “Well, as soon as he travels to 112 countries and negotiates a peace deal, a ceasefire, a release of dissidents and opening of new opportunities and nations around the world, or even spends 11 hours testifying in front of a congressional committee, he can talk to me about stamina.” Trump replied, “Let me tell you, Hillary has experience, but it’s bad experience. And this country can’t afford to have another four years of that kind of experience.”

DONALD TRUMP KILLS IT WITH MASSIVE FLORIDA RALLY !
Sep 27, 16 10:16 PM appended by joe hampton
Donald Trump scored with a massive rally Tuesday night in Melbourne, Florida before more than 10,000 enthusiastic fans. Defying cable news pundits who are still going on about his supposed stalemate in Monday’s debate against Hillary Clinton, Trump delivered arguably his greatest speech ever. He made clear exactly what is at stake on November 8th. “We have 41 days to make our country great again,” Trump said. “You have one magnificent chance and in our opinion our last chance.” Trump railed against the special interests propping up this country — the ones who all go to the same restaurants and conferences — and vowed that we will once again have a government of, by, and for the people. “Have you ever seen a greater embarrassment to our country? The people getting rich off the rigged system, and they don’t want it to change, are throwing money at Hillary Clinton,” he said. “She’s an insider fighting only for her donors.” “They nod along when Hillary slanders you and calls you deplorable and irredeemable. What she doesn’t understand is you’re the greatest people on Earth…You’re smart, you’re sharp. You really want one thing. You want to Make America Great Again.”

local, what in the holy blue blazes are you talking about?

ICANN was NEVER a U.S. government agency. Ever. The Commerce Department did have oversight authority over it, but that's as far as it ever went.

Picture the Trump toddler/bully/child having a hissy-fit with his finger on the ICBM red button after accessing the launch codes.

Even other bullies can see the danger in this . . .
