Multiple Westhampton Beach Indoor Track Athletes Qualify For State Meet

Feb 13, 2018 4:34 PM

It shouldn’t be too difficult to pick out the Westhampton Beach indoor track athletes at the New York State Championships. There will certainly be enough of them.

The 4x400-meter relay team of senior Kayla Berman, junior Maeve Murphy, sophomores Julia Smith and Sydnie Mason and freshmen Maureen Duffy and Abigail Gobler won the race at the Section XI Championships, otherwise known as the state qualifier, at Suffolk County Community College in Brentwood on Monday night. The Lady Hurricanes finished the race in 4:04.92, three seconds ahead of Sachem East.

They will be joined by junior Juan Lasso and senior Laurence Barr-Forget who qualified in their events. Lasso placed second in the 1,000-meter race in 2:33.29, less than a second behind winner Isaiah Claiborne, a senior from Northport. Barr-Forget won the county title in the pole vault, reaching 14 feet, and will compete at the state meet for the second year in a row.

There were a number of Lady Canes who placed in their respective events but were unable to qualify for states. Mason placed fourth in the pole vault, reaching 9 feet 6 inches. Natalie Ehlers, a junior, placed fifth in the 1,500-meter racewalk in 7:18.65. Freshman Ashley Steedman placed seventh in the 3,000-meter race in 11:01.03. Freshman Jacke Amato placed ninth in the 1,000-meter race in 3:15.81. And freshman Oceane Ode placed 15th in the 55-meter dash in 7.67 seconds.

The state meet in Saturday, March 3, at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex on Staten Island.
