Excellence is the norm for the Westhampton Beach boys tennis team, and this season should be no exception.

The Hurricanes bring back one All-State player and two All-County picks to the team this year and are hoping to repeat as Division IV champions. Leading the way will be senior Danny Tocco who, along with Riley Smith, who has since graduated, earned All-State honors in doubles competition. A pair of All-County selections in freshman Josh Kaplan and eighth-grader Andre Insalaco also return, along with junior Daniel Caputo, an All-League pick last season. Those four players will see most of their time in the singles lineup, and give the Hurricanes talent in those four spots.

In doubles, longtime head coach John Czartosieski expects three seniors to lead the team—All-County returnee Brennan Tomlinson, All-Division pick Adam Sheren, and All-League player Sean Toner. The team was still conducting tryouts to determine what other players would make the team and where they would fit in the lineup as of last week. There is room for new players to step up and make their mark after the loss of three key players from last year’s team, including the aforementioned Smith, All-County doubles player Owen Williams, and All-Division doubles player Andrew Hempel.

The Hurricanes will compete in League VII, along with Shoreham/Wading River, Ross, Southold, Rocky Point, and East Hampton. Czartosieski expects East Hampton to give his team its toughest competition.

The Hurricanes went 12-3 last year and lost in the quarterfinals of the Suffolk County Team Tournament to powerhouse Half Hollow Hills West. Westhampton Beach is scheduled to start the season at home against Hills West on Friday, March 16, at 4 p.m. in a non-league match.
